With a bright smile, Claire added, \u201cDouglas, congratulations! Wishing you all the best on this momentous occasion. May your business thrive for many years to come!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you so much!\u201d Douglas replied, his excitement palpable. Leaning in closer to Charlie, he whispered playfully, \u201cI can see that you and our belle are quite close, contrary to what the rumors suggest! So, when are you planning to have a baby?\u201d<\/p>\n

Claire\u2019s cheeks flushed with embarrassment upon hearing the whisper. Charlie quickly responded, \u201cCut it out! If we do end up having a baby, you\u2019ll be the first to know, and I expect a gift from you!\u201d<\/p>\n

Douglas chuckled and nodded. \u201cAbsolutely! I\u2019ll make sure to get the little one something special!\u201d<\/p>\n

At that moment, an average-looking woman, heavily made up, approached Douglas and inquired, \u201cDouglas, who are these people?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my college buddy, Charlie, and this is Claire, our class belle and also Charlie\u2019s wife,\u201d Douglas introduced them.<\/p>\n

After the introductions, Douglas added, \u201cAnd this is my fianc\u00e9e, Lily Lewis.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh? Is he the deadbeat\u2026?\u201d Lily blurted out, then quickly realized her faux pas. Clearing her throat, she forced a smile and said, \u201cDouglas speaks so highly of you both. You truly seem like a match made in heaven!\u201d<\/p>\n

Ignoring her earlier comment, Charlie handed the painting to Lily. \u201cThis is just a little token of our affection.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily smiled, \u201cOh, you really didn\u2019t have to!\u201d<\/p>\n

However, despite her words, she eagerly accepted the large gift box.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou two go ahead with your plans; we\u2019ll entertain ourselves,\u201d Charlie said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlright,\u201d Douglas replied apologetically, \u201cI\u2019m sorry, Charlie, but I need to greet some other guests as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once Charlie and Claire left, Lily wasted no time opening the gift box. Inside, she found a scroll and frowned in disappointment. \u201cWhat is this? What did your friend give us?\u201d<\/p>\n

Douglas replied, \u201cCan\u2019t you see? It\u2019s a painting!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDuh!\u201d Lily scoffed, rolling her eyes. She unrolled the scroll and sneered, \u201cWhat on earth is this? Some old, rotten painting that\u2019s probably only worth a couple of hundred dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n

Douglas, now serious, said, \u201cYou can\u2019t put a price on everything! Their sincerity and goodwill are what truly matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEnough with your preachy attitude! I warn you, stay away from friends like them! They can\u2019t even afford to give us something decent!\u201d Lily retorted, her irritation evident.<\/p>\n

Douglas\u2019s expression darkened as he replied, \u201cLily, are you really that much of a snob?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily shot back indignantly, \u201cDouglas Adams, how could you say that? If I were a snob, why would I be with you, a pauper? Don\u2019t forget, my dad invested most of the money in this restaurant!\u201d<\/p>\n

Douglas blinked, caught off guard and somewhat embarrassed by her outburst.<\/p>\n

At that moment, Clinton approached them, looking much more confident after recovering from the earlier incident with his car. A smug expression returned to his face.<\/p>\n

He handed Douglas a thick envelope, saying flatly, \u201cDoug, I wasn\u2019t sure what to give you for the grand opening, so here\u2019s some \u2018financial assistance.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily graciously thanked him as she accepted the envelope. Squeezing it, she estimated it contained at least eight or ten thousand dollars in cash, and a coy smile spread across her face. \u201cThank you so much!\u201d<\/p>\n

Clinton waved dismissively and inquired, \u201cI noticed Charlie gave you something earlier; what was it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily scoffed, \u201cOh, just a painting\u2014probably something from a junkyard sale or flea market, worth maybe a couple of hundred bucks!\u201d<\/p>\n

Clinton smirked in response, \u201cOnce a loser, always a loser!\u201d<\/p>\n
