Is Dad not being nice to you?” Jolene said. A troubled look then appeared on

her face. “But I’m forbidden from bringing children along with me.”

Juliet knew that her mother was working as a housekeeper in some other family.

But what could Juliet do?

Those bad men came to her house every single day. She was so afraid one of them would pounce on her one day.

Jolene hugged Juliet. “I’ll go talk to your Dad and tell him to be nicer to you, okay?”

What was the point of that?

James would always put on an act, only treating Juliet well whenever Jolene was around. He would spend his days attending to Jolene, forgoing his card games with his friends. Juliet watched Jolene giggle delightfully after hearing what James said. Jolene then handed the latter a wad of cash.

Juliet then understood that one needed to depend on oneself in life.

She began learning to observe people’s expressions and to hide her own emotions.

She clung to her mother, wanting to hear about Jolene’s employers—the richest family in Navalton.

Juliet thought it would be nice to go there instead. Better to stay away from these disgusting men and her gambling addict of a father.

“The Greene family is so rich. Mr. Greene must be really powerful, huh?” Juliet asked.

Jolene chuckled upon hearing this. She was in the middle of packing her luggage.

“Exactly. Mr. Greene is very hardworking and even knows several foreign languages. Mrs. Greene is very capable too,” Jolene said.

Juliet blinked her pretty doe eyes and said sweetly, “If only I could get to know Mrs. Greene and learn from her. Who knows? I might end up marrying someone just as capable as Mr. Greene in the future.”

Jolene was amused by Juliet’s words. “What are you thinking in that little head of yours, hm? The Greene family is so powerful. How could we ever compare?”

“But I really want to learn from them. They’re all so rich.” Juliet continued.

Chapter 33

2/3

Jolene ignored her, thinking it was just Juliet’s childish imagination running wild.

But Juliet had purposely said those words in a louder volume so that James could hear from the

side.

Sure enough, a lightbulb lit up in James’ mind.

Why hadn’t he thought of this before?

The only reason James was able to live the life he had was that he relied on Jolene’s hefty income from her employment with the Greene family as their housekeeper.

If Juliet could marry into such a rich family, James might just be able to get some passive income like those other rich folks and earn some cash without lifting a finger!

The more James thought about this, the more he felt like it could really work.

Juliet was such a pretty girl. Her features were far more attractive than those other girls in the village. Plus, Jolene was currently working for the Greene family, which put her in quite an advantageous situation.

James leaned in to Jolene’s side and wrapped an arm around her waist. “Sweetie, wouldn’t it be quite an opportunity for us if our daughter went to live with the Greene family?”

“What

kind of opportunity?” Jolene asked, brows knitted together.

“Think about it. Juliet has such a pretty face. If she can grow close to the Greene family’s son, who knows-”

“What the hell are you thinking?” Jolene cut James off. “How could we ever compare to the Greene family?”

“Why not?” James didn’t give up. “Our girl has the face of a porcelain doll. She’s on par with just about any rich heiress you could find!”

Jolene kept on shaking her head. “You’re being delusional. Mrs. Greene is an extremely powerful woman. Merely being in her presence is draining enough, not to mention becoming her daughter-in-law. Even if Jules succeeds, she’d still face a lot of hardship. I don’t want our baby to live like that.”

James snorted, displeased. “Nothing is possible without money, not even getting medical care. Think about it–if your family had money, do you think your father would’ve died from his sickness at such a young age? Money matters most. Everything else comes after.”

James’ words made Jolene hesitate for a moment.

X CLOSE

Chapter 33

Even though Jolene’s mother, Clara Taylor, was old now, she was still working as a housekeeper in the Greene residence.

It was true that Clara had a lot of money saved up, but she was also mentally exhausted from it all. Amanda’s temper was worse than Alicia’s, which caused Clara more hardship than before.

James noticed Jolene’s resolve waver, so he quickly added, “Do you really want to work as a housekeeper for the rest of your life? Forever being treated as a lesser human being? I’m not saying Jules has to marry the Greene kid. She can always marry one of the other rich kids in his circle, no?”

Save Your Pleas: I’m With Your Best Friend Now.

Chapter 33 1/3 “What is it, dear?
