I wouldn’t want to carry any

emotions into the wedding, right?”

The explanation was reasonable, and some of Logan’s suspicion faded. “But I can’t feel at ease leaving you alone. Logan hurried after her.

The moment he entered the living room, Logan’s eyes were drawn to the memorial portrait hanging right in the center.

In life, Eleanor had been a stern teacher. Apart from showing a bit of warmth in front of Vivian, she was serious most of the time. Eleanor hardly ever smiled.

Logan glanced at the portrait and hurriedly looked away. He felt as though Eleanor’s gaze was piercing, as if it could see through everything he had done.

He sat down stiffly on the couch, yet still felt a sharp, piercing stare fixed on him. A chill ran down his spine.

Watching his guilty, uneasy demeanor, Vivian inwardly let out a cold snort. She was certain Logan wouldn’t be able to last even two nights here,

Vivian said, “When my grandmother passed away, I had only just returned. She was still talking to me, saying that she wanted to see you one last time. But in the few seconds I stepped aside to call you, she was gone.”

Logan jolted up and hurried to explain. “I was too busy at the time and didn’t see your call.” Vivian nodded. “Yes, I know. You were in a meeting. Sloane answered your phone. I asked her

X CLOSE

Chapter 39

2.2

to tell you that my grandmother had passed away. She told me it was a blessing for that old lady to die peacefully.”

As she spoke of that night, Vivian couldn’t stop her eyes from reddening. It wasn’t because she felt wronged, but because she couldn’t accept that Eleanor had truly vanished from her life just like that.

Disbelief filled Logan’s eyes, and he hurriedly took out his phone and reviewed the call log.

He didn’t find any record from that night and realized that Sloane had deleted it.

He clenched his phone so tightly that the veins on the back of his hand bulged.

Vivian looked at him calmly, recounting everything that had happened that night. She told him about calling the ambulance, about the medical confirming Eleanor’s death, and about handling the funeral arrangements.

Seeing the redness around her eyes, Logan felt suffocated. A surge of heartache and regret spread through him. “Vivian, I’m sorry.”

This apology came straight from his heart.

Vivian, however, only smiled faintly and said softly, “It’s not important anymore.”

As she spoke, she looked up at Eleanor’s memorial portrait.

She murmured, “They say that the souls of the dead linger in the house they lived in for a while after they pass away. If you truly feel sorry, then stay in the living room and repent to my grandmother. Maybe, in the dead of the night, her soul will enter your dreams and let you know how she feels.”

Panic flashed in Logan’s eyes. “Vivian…”

Vivian looked at him sharply. “Are you afraid?”

Logan shook his head. “Of course not.”

Vivian said, “Good.”

With that, she turned and went back to the bedroom, locking the door behind her.

Logan sat there in a daze in the living room.
