She was bound hand and foot, a filthy, blackened rag stuffed in her mouth. His forehead was red and swollen, the skin broken, clear evidence of repeated, forceful\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>kowtowing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hearing her footsteps, Haskell turned his wheelchair around, a lighting up his face. \u201cLarissa, you\u2019re here.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Larissa walked over, carrying her medical kit, and sat on the stone bench that had been prepared with a soft cushion. \u201cSolomon sent Draven back,\u201d she said, intrigued. \u201cWhy haven\u2019t you let Faith go?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Haskell opened the bento boxes he had brought. \u201cI was planning to,\u201d he said with a wry smile,\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cbut Solomon decided to be clever.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow so?\u201d Larissa asked, opening her kit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe tried to hand Draven over to Lucius.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Larissa laughed. \u201cWhat was he thinking? I swear, my father and brother will dig up your mother\u2019s grave!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s being too loud. It\u2019s bothering Larissa,\u201d Haskell said softly. \u201cWear her out a little.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Crispin hauled Faith to her feet and slapped her hard across the face. The sharp crack echoed in the quiet air, and an angry red mark immediately blossomed on her pale cheek.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes widened in disbelief. \u201cCrispin, you\u2019re nothing but Haskell\u2019s dog! How dare you\u2026\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Slap.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Before she could finish, another blow landed on her other cheek.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Crispin calmly rubbed his hand. \u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t I dare? I\u2019m a dog. Don\u2019t you know that dogs love to throw their weight around when their master\u2019s here?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Faith was speechless. Fear finally began to sink in. Why would a dog feel ashamed of hitting a woman?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Faith was once again at a loss for words.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Larissa let out a chuckle. \u201cHaskell, your man Crispin has quite a sense of humor.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Haskell just smiled.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hearing Larissa\u2019s mocking laughter, Faith\u2019s anger flared again he ignored Crispin and turned I suggest you let me go.\u201d her attention back to Haskell. \u201cHaskell, Draven is in your ha\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither you nor your brother had any intention of letting me go. Why should I extend a courtesy you denied me?\u201d Haskell replied with a placid smile. \u201cYour brother took Draven to Africa to lure me there, didn\u2019t he? To make sure I never came back.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re imagining things, Haskell,\u201d Faith retorted. \u201cMy brother had nothing to do with it. He tried to harm you once before.
