Larissa retorts bitterly, accusing Paxton of having been absent for the past twenty years. Neville reassures that he and Sapphira will take good care of Larissa, and Kiernan, seeing Larissa’s resolve, agrees to have Jett prepare the agreement. After Kiernan leaves, Larissa confronts the remaining family members, mocking their resentment and defiance.

Vivica accuses Larissa of being a traitor to the family, while Leopold, humiliated by his grandfather’s reprimand, urges his mother to leave. Paxton had hoped to use the situation to undermine Larissa in Kiernan’s eyes but is shocked by her cunning. He admits underestimating her before departing. Vivica warns Larissa she will regret her decisions, then follows the others out.

Outside the villa, Honora struggles with how to explain a recording that has caused tension. Leopold comforts her, believing her and understanding that Larissa’s provocations pushed Honora to her limit. Honora expresses her pain and desire not to cause further family strife. Vivica reassures her that she is loved and that her birth mother’s past actions were for Honora’s benefit, which brings Honora to tears.

Vivica reflects on the difficulty of sending Honora away for the sake of a biological daughter she views as inferior, hoping Larissa will eventually return. Paxton criticizes Honora for being careless and giving Larissa leverage, but Honora promises not to repeat the mistake. Vivica voices concern about whether Larissa will still agree to marry Haskell on Honora’s behalf, to which Honora offers to marry him herself to appease Larissa. Leopold vehemently opposes this, refusing to let Honora marry someone he deems unworthy.

Paxton’s expression turned severe. “Have you thought this through? Once you sign that document, your mother and I will truly have nothing more to do with you.”

Larissa looked at him. “That’s a laugh, Uncle Paxton. As if you’ve had anything to do with me for the past twenty years.”

Neville’s voice was firm. “You don’t need to worry about that, Paxton. Sapphira and I will take good

care of Larissa.”

Seeing that Larissa’s mind was made up, Kiernan didn’t press the issue.

“Larissa, I will have Jett draw up the agreement tomorrow.”

With that, he allowed Jett to escort him from the villa.

“Okay, thank you, Grandpa. Take care,” Larissa said with a smile. She then turned to face the four pairs of resentful eyes still glaring at her.

“Well, Uncle Paxton, Aunt Vivica, Grandpa has left. Why are you still lingering? Are you hoping for another scolding?”

“Larissa, we were right not to want you,” Vivica spat. “You’re nothing but a traitor to your own family!”

“Mom, let’s not waste our breath on her. Let’s go,” Leopold said, feeling utterly humiliated after being reprimanded by his grandpa.

“Larissa, I hope you don’t come crawling back to us for forgiveness one day.” He let out a cold snort and took Honora’s hand, leading her away.

Paxton had hoped to use the incident to tarnish Larissa’s image in Kiernan’s eyes, making her easier to control later. He had never imagined his biological daughter would be so calculating.

“I really underestimated you,” he said, then turned and left.

Vivica stood up. “Leopold is right. You’ll live to regret this!” she declared before storming out after

them.

…

After leaving the east villa, Honora tried to figure out how to explain the recording to them.

To her surprise, Leopold spoke first, his voice reassuring. “Honora, don’t overthink it. I believe you, and I understand. You never would have said those things if Larissa hadn’t pushed you to your breaking point.”

Honora seized the opportunity, her voice filled with manufactured pain. “I always told myself I could understand why Larissa treated me this way, that I didn’t resent her. I thought if I were in her shoes, I’d find it hard to accept, too. But today… after she trampled on my kindness again and again, I just feel like I can’t take it anymore. I just don’t want my presence to cause trouble between you, Mom and Dad, and Larissa.”

Vivica’s eyes filled with adoration. “What happened back then wasn’t your fault. Every mother wants the best for her child. Your birth mother did what she did so you could have a better life. She’s paid

1/2

18:21

Chapter 33

the price for her greed; she’s in prison now. You don’t resent us for what we did to her, do you?”

Honora shook her head, tears in her eyes. “Mom, you are my mother. You always will be.”

Vivica felt her own eyes well up. After raising such a brilliant, beautiful daughter for twenty years, how could she bear to send her away for a biological child who was inferior in every way? She had done her part for the other girl. If that girl had any sense, she would come back to them.

Paxton’s tone was stern. “Honora, you were careless this time. You shouldn’t have given her an opportunity to use against us.”

“I know, Dad,” Honora said, nodding. “I didn’t expect my sister to be so scheming. I won’t make that mistake again.”

“My only concern now,” Vivica said, voicing her worry, “is that after all this, will she still be willing to marry Haskell in Honora’s place?”

Honora bit her lip. “If it comes to it, Mom, let me be the one to marry him. Maybe that will appease Larissa.”

“Absolutely not!” Leopold interjected. “I will not let you marry a cripple!”

2/2

Sara Lili is a daring romance writer who turns icy landscapes into scenes of fiery passion.
