Honora accused Larissa of being ungrateful for her parents’ efforts to bring her back to marry Haskell and climb the social ladder. She mocked Larissa for siding with Neville and Sapphira, making her an outcast on both sides, and claimed that the Judson family only accepted Larissa because of her bloodline, hoping she would inherit some fortune.

Honora continued to belittle Larissa, boasting about her own education in music, painting, and languages, while dismissing Larissa’s skills as limited to planting vegetables and doing laundry. When Larissa ignored her insults, Honora’s taunts grew sharper, until Larissa suddenly slapped her across the face. Honora fell to the ground, glaring with hatred but quickly changed her expression to one of innocent victimhood when she saw Leopold approaching.

Leopold hurried over, furious at the sight of Honora on the ground. Honora tearfully claimed she had only offered to teach Larissa music and painting and didn’t understand why she was slapped. Larissa called Honora a contemptible snake, and Leopold angrily reprimanded Larissa for hitting her sister and threatened to punish her. Honora smirked, confident that Leopold would defend her as he always had since childhood.

However, before Leopold could act, Larissa unexpectedly kicked him in the knee, causing him to fall to his knees. She then stepped on his supporting hand, dismissing the situation as noisy. Honora was shocked and pleaded with Larissa, unable to understand how she could hit their brother after hitting her. The tension between the siblings escalated sharply in this confrontation.

With that, Larissa forcefully yanked her hand away from Honora’s grasp.

Honora’s smile froze. Seeing that they were alone, she dropped the pretense.

“Larissa, why must you be so ungrateful? Mom and Dad only brought you back so you could marry Haskell in my place. A country girl like you should be thanking your lucky stars for the chance to climb the social ladder. Why are you making things so difficult for yourself by siding with Neville and Sapphira? Now you’ve made yourself an outcast on both sides. How awkward.”

She continued, her voice dripping with scorn, “And you don’t really believe they like you, do you? They only agreed to take you in because you have Judson blood. They’re just hoping that if Grandpa is generous, you’ll inherit a piece of the family fortune.”

When Larissa ignored her, she pressed on with her provocations. “Do you know what this building is for?”

She answered her own question. “This is where the Judson children are educated. I’ve spent my life in here, learning from the best private tutors money can buy. Music, painting, languages… I’m proficient in all of them.”

Her eyes raked over Larissa dismissively. “I wonder how many of those skills you possess.”

“None, I’d imagine. What a pity. You’re too old to start learning now.”

“But don’t worry,” she added with a saccharine smile. “You know how to plant vegetables and do laundry. I don’t know any of that. I’ll have to ask you for lessons sometime.”

Without a word, Larissa swung her hand and slapped Honora across the face.

The blow sent Honora stumbling to the ground. She lay there, glaring up at Larissa with pure hatred. Just as she was about to speak, she spotted Leopold approaching in the distance. Instantly, her expression changed. She clutched her cheek, her eyes welling up with tears, looking for all the world

like a victim of a terrible injustice.

Leopold saw the scene and stormed over, his face a mask of fury. He knelt down and helped Honora up. “Honora, what happened?”

Honora, still covering her face, sobbed, “I just asked Larissa if she wanted to learn music and painting. I said I could teach her… I don’t understand why she suddenly slapped me.”

Larissa nonchalantly shook her hand. “You don’t understand? It’s because you’re a contemptible little

snake.”

After helping Honora to her feet, Leopold glared at Larissa. “How dare you hit Honora! No one has ever laid a hand on her. Your constant verbal attacks were bad enough, but now you’ve resorted to violence. I’m going to teach you a lesson today!”

A triumphant smirk flickered across Honora’s lips. Leopold was right. Ever since they were children, he had beaten anyone who dared to bully her, boy or girl. Larissa was about to pay dearly for that slap.

But before Leopold could even get close, Larissa shot out a kick, striking him squarely on the knee.

110

18:20

Chapter 26

He didn’t land a single blow. Instead, he crumpled, his hands hitting the ground as he fell to his knees before her.

Before he could react, Larissa stepped on the hand he was using to support himself.

“So noisy,” she said, casually cleaning out her ear.

“Leopold!” Honora cried out, shocked that Larissa had actually attacked him. “Larissa, I can understand you hitting me, but how could you attack our brother?”

2/2

Sara Lili is a daring romance writer who turns icy landscapes into scenes of fiery passion.
