What if something bad happened to her? What if she got lost? Or what if that mean lady was being mean to her again?

I pressed my nose against the window, squinting through the darkness. Hunter stood behind me, his big hands on my shoulders.

“Is she here yet?” I asked for the millionth time.

“Not yet, little man,” Hunter answered patiently. “Your mom just texted she’s on her way.”

I didn’t like when Mommy was late. What if she forgot to come home? What if someone took her away? My tummy felt all twisty inside.

Then I saw the big black car. It was super fancy, like the ones in my picture books about rich people. And there was Mommy, stepping out of it! But she wasn’t alone. A tall man in a dark suit was with her.

“Look!” I pointed. “That’s Daddy!”

“Your daddy?” Hunter sounded surprised.

“Yes,” I confirmed. “Daddy’s coming to see Mommy again. I don’t like him being around her all the time.”

I watched as Mommy stumbled and fell. Daddy helped her up and fixed her dress. They stopped under the big tree. He was touching her hair, and then his face got closer to hers. He was trying to kiss my mommy!

“No!” I shouted, scrambling down from the window. “He can’t do that!”

My brain worked super fast. I need your help with an emergency mission!” I grabbed his hand and pulled him to the emergency exit stairs.

We raced down to the garden area.
