\u201cIt\u2019s already 6:35! You broke your promise!\u201d I puffed my cheeks, placing my hands on my hips to show how serious I was about this five\u2013minute delay.\u00a0<\/p>\n
She melted at my expression and planted a kiss on my cheek. \u201cHow can you be so cute?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
My heart finally settled. I rested my head on her shoulder, secretly glancing toward Aiden with a triumphant wink.\u00a0<\/p>\n
I found Mommy first, so clearly she would love me most!\u00a0<\/p>\n
I saw a flash of disappointment cross Aiden\u2019s dark eyes before he quickly masked it. He looked up and asked in a neutral tone, \u201cMs. Wright, is this your son?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
I held my breath. This was a critical moment.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mommy hesitated before responding, \u201cYes, this is my son, Oliver. You\u2019re both six years old, the same age.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Victory! I could hardly contain my smile as Mommy set me down and continued, \u201cOliver, this is the son of my company\u2019s owner. He\u2019s thirsty, so I invited him in for some water. You two can play together while I make dinner.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Aiden and I exchanged glances, sending invisible sparks flying between us. This was war.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mommy took both of us by the hand and led us into the apartment. Behind us, I knew Hunter and Henderson were following at a distance.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Once inside, Mommy went to the kitchen while Aiden and I sat with building blocks in the living room.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThis isn\u2019t a place for you, Aiden,\u201d I said angrily, keeping my voice low so Mommy couldn\u2019t hear from the kitchen.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018If you can be here, why can\u2019t I?\u201d Aiden toyed with a small block in his hand. \u201cWhat do you think Father would say if he knew you\u2019d found yourself a\u00a0<\/p>\n

I sniffed haughtily. \u201cYes, my real mom! Cedar is so good to me, loves me so much, and cares for me so deeply\u2013of course I consider her my real mother.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Aiden smirked but said nothing more, lowering his head to focus on the building blocks.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Half an hour later, Mommy emerged from the kitchen carrying dinner. The apartment filled with delicious aromas.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWow, Mommy! It smells amazing! I bet it tastes even better!\u201d I exclaimed dramatically, making sure my enthusiasm outshone anything Aiden might say.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Aiden pressed his lips together, looking shy. \u201cMs. Wright, are you sure it\u2019s okay for me to join you for dinner?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
