She smoothed down her pencil skirt and adjusted her blazer, looking professional but nervous.

‘Do I look okay, Oliver?‘ she asked, tucking a strand of hair behind her eat.

“You look perfect, Mommy! I assured her, bouncing on my toes. “The most beautiful and smartest designer ever!”

“Thank you, sweetie.” She smiled, kneeling down to my level and kissing my forehead. Wish me luck!”

“You’ll do great, Mommy! They’ll love you!” I said, giving her my biggest smile and two thumbs up as she stood up to open the door.

As soon as she disappeared in my view, I dropped my smile and looked at my smart watch. I pressed the side button twice.

“Hunter? It’s time. Come get me now. Operation Make Mommy Happy is starting.”

Within five minutes, a sleek black car pulled up, and Hunter emerged, opening the door for me. “Young Master, your car awaits.”

I climbed into the backseat, immediately pulling out my tablet. “Drive fast, Hunter. We need to get to Nest Design’s executive offices before Mommy finishes

her interview.

As Hunter navigated through Chicago’s morning traffic, I reviewed my notes. Getting an apartment near Mommy’s had been brilliant. It made everything so

much easier.

“Hunter, what position is Mommy interviewing for?” I asked, even though I already knew.

“According to the job listing, it’s for a junior designer position.”

I scoffed, feeling indignant. “Junior? That’s ridiculous! She should be at least a director.”

Hunter’s eyes met mine in the rearview mirror. “The starting salary is $60,000 per year.”

My jaw dropped. “It’s not enough for Mommy! She needs a nice apartment in Gold Coast, not that old building with the creaky elevator. And she needs pretty clothes and good food, not those frozen dinners.”

I crossed my arms, my mind made up. ‘She should be a Design Director with at least $100,000. No, make it $200,000.”

“Young Master, with all due respect, these decisions usually involve consideration of experience, qualifications-”

“Hunter,” I interrupted, using my serious voice, “Mommy is the best designer ever. She makes beautiful things and explains them so even I understand. She works harder than anyone, and she’s kind. That matters more than… than… qualifications.” I pronounced the last word carefully, proud I remembered it.

Hunter sighed but nodded. ‘We’ve arrived.”

The Nest Design headquarters stood tall and gleaming, all glass and steel. As we walked through the lobby, I noticed everything–the awards lining the walls, the modern furniture, the busy people in fancy clothes typing on computers or talking importantly on phones.

3:57 pm M

Chapter 27

The receptionist looked confused when she saw me. ‘Hello there, little one. Are you lost?”

I stood tall, channeling my father’s confidence. ‘I’m Oliver, and I have an appointment with Mr. Thomas Coleman.”

“Oh! The door opened, and a distinguished–looking

man in his forties entered.

Thomas Coleman’s face fell slightly when he saw me. He was our old butler’s nephew who had visited our estate last Christmas, and that single visit had apparently left him with significant psychological trauma.

“Young Master Oliver?” Thomas looked genuinely alarmed. “What are you doing here?”

“What, I’m not allowed to visit?” I tilted my chin up haughtily, mimicking my brother Aiden’s posture when he spoke to subordinates.

“No–I mean, of course you’re welcome,” Thomas stammered, dabbing at beads of sweat forming on his forehead. “What I meant was, Young Mr. Sterling’s visit brings great honor to our humble company. Would you like some juice or milk? I could-

“Cut the fake pleasantries.” I interrupted, settling into the chair with all the authority I could muster. “I have business to discuss. Who’s currently your

Senior Design Director?”

Thomas shifted nervously. “That would be Patricia Lawson. Did you… want to meet her?”

“Move her to another position, I declared coldly, my short legs barely reaching the floor beneath the conference table. “I have a new candidate for you to

appoint as Director.”

Thomas’s eyelid visibly twitched. “Young Mr. Sterling, senior management changes require your father’s signature. I don’t have the authority to-

“Do you think I’m a three–year–old who doesn’t understand anything?” I scoffed. “Daddy told me that Nest Design will be mine to run someday. If you won’t

listen to me now, once I take control, you’ll be the first person I fire!”

Thomas looked utterly miserable. I almost felt bad for him–almost.

“One more thing!” I stood up, hands on my hips. “If you dare tell Daddy about this meeting, you’re finished! Remember what happened with Mr. Squawks?”

unconsciously touching his head where my parrot had yanked off his toupee during his Christmas visit. “How could I forget?”

‘I still have the video, I mentioned casually. “Aria thought it was hilarious. She wanted to post it on her social media.”

“Oliver,” Thomas sighed, “even if I wanted to help, there are procedures. The candidate you’re suggesting–who is it anyway?”

“Cedar Wright, I announced, “She’s interviewing today for a junior position. She’s my mommy, and I need you to make her the Design Director.”

.Thomas blinked several times. “Your… mommy? Oliver, I don’t understand.”

“You don’t need to understand,” I said firmly. “You just need to do it.”

*There isn’t a director position currently open, Thomas tried explaining. “And qualifications must be considered, experience—*

2/3

Chapter 27

“Make a position!” I insisted. “I know you can do that.”

Thomas rubbed his temples. ‘I… I will try.”

Thomas glanced at his watch and stood up suddenly. “I need to go now, Master Oliver. The candidate interviews are scheduled to begin at ten, and your… mother is among them. I should personally handle this.”

“Okay!” I couldn’t help the smile that spread across my face. This was working out perfectly!

“I’ll return in about thirty minutes with the results, young Master, Thomas continued, straightening his tie. “Please make yourself comfortable in my office while you wait.
