Barto had taken his place next to Maya and couldn’t stop giving him murderous glares whenever she wasn’t looking. He wondered when Barto had started hating him so much.

After finishing their meal, Barto said he was going back to the city of Farell. He couldn’t be away from the guild for so long. Maya offered to accompany him to the door to say goodbye, but he refused, saying, “I would prefer Prince Cassian accompany me. I would like to speak with him for a moment before I leave.”

“Alright,” Cassian agreed.

Barto kissed his sister on the forehead and told her, “Think about what I told you and remember you can always count on me.”

“I know,” Maya replied.

Maya gave him a tight hug and whispered with teary eyes, “See you soon, little brother.”

Barto stroked her head, as he had done so many times when they were children, and with a sweet and affectionate voice, he said, “Until soon.”

Cassian accompanied Barto, and as they walked through the long corridors, Barto remained silent. At some point, Cassian wondered if what he had told Maya was a lie, if it had only been an excuse so she wouldn’t accompany him to the exit..

“Take care of my sister,” Barto suddenly said, breaking the silence between the two. Cassian looked at him for a moment and responded, somewhat surprised, “I would give my life for

her.”

“And she would hate you for it. Maya is not someone who likes to share her pain, so make sure to always be there for her and don’t do anything that would make her suffer.”

“I will do so,” Cassian replied.

“And if anything ever happens to my sister, consider yourself dead.”

“If anything were to happen to her, If I were to lose her, death would be a gift to me.”

Barto was satisfied with the answer he received, so he didn’t say anything else. When they arrived at the entrance, he waved goodbye and left.

Maya had run to her room when her brother left. She went out to the balcony and could see him crossing the palace doors. The pixie suddenly appeared and said to her with great regret,

1/3

< Part II: A New Danger

“Why did he leave so soon? I wanted to talk to him again.”

“You have nothing to talk to him about.”

The little fairy had been talking to Barto all night, but that was something she didn’t dare confess to Maya, because if she found out, she would crush her like a grape.

Claim

“She is a wandering fairy, just curious about him, about the kind of life he leads,” she said, omitting part of the truth.

With great regret, Maya replied as she watched her brother disappear behind the high walls of the palace, “A normal life, something I will never have again.”

When Taren returned, he looked agitated and could barely stand. He held his abdomen to stop the blood that was seeping through his fingers. Sirius hurried to his side, helped him stay on his feet, and asked, “What happened? Who hurt you?”

“Monster, there’s a monster in the forest.”

Sirius knew that Taren was an excellent warrior and that it was unlikely for a monster to surprise and injure him. That could only mean one thing–the monster was too strong, and

that’s why he got hurt.

“Abril, come immediately!” Sirius shouted to get her attention. Abril did as Sirius ordered, but she couldn’t reach them. From among the trees emerged a tall, thin, completely black monster with a human shape. He quickened his pace and, with a hissing and chilling voice, he said to her, “You have been killing my brothers, bearer of light. Today you will die.”

Abril used her silver flames against him, but he extinguished them as if they were nothing and grabbed Abril by the throat. She used her magic to attack him, and if she caused any harm, he didn’t show it.

Sirius let go of Taren and ran to help Abril, but that strange creature threw Abril away and attacked him. It was extremely fast; Sirius couldn’t dodge it, but since he had created a barrier, it couldn’t harm him–its sharp claws collided against it.

Abril got up from the ground, focused her power in her hands, and ran to help Sirius. She grabbed the creature by the waist and started infusing her magic desperately. Sirius took the opportunity to immobilize the creature while Abril used her power.

Taren approached with the little strength he had left, wielded his sword, and cut off its head. Black blood splattered on them, staining their clothes. The headless body kept moving. Abril released her power like a torrent–the silver flames pierced through the flesh and burned until they turned into ashes.

2/3

< Part II A New Danger

Claim

Taren fell to the ground unconscious. She quickly approached him, put her hand on his wound, and infused her magic into him. As the wound closed, color returned to Taren’s face,

but he remained unconscious.

Sirius approached, took Taren, and said, “We need to go.”

“It’s dangerous for Taren to teleport us. Although I healed his wound, he has lost a lot of blood.”

“I know, but it would be even more dangerous to stay in this place. We don’t know what else might be in this forest, and apparently, your power can’t detect them, and finishing them off isn’t that simple. So let’s go.”

Abril knew it was dangerous to move Taren, but she knew that what Sirius was saying was true. She hadn’t sensed that monster; that creature was completely different from the

monsters she had faced before.

“You’re right, it’s better for us to go. Let’s hope Taren survives the journey.”

Sirius took a parchment out of his bag. Since Taren was unconscious and couldn’t use the teleportation device, he tore the parchment, and they disappeared, leaving behind the ashes of that strange and dangerous creature that had been about to kill them.

Cedella is a passionate storyteller known for her bold romantic and spicy novels that keep readers hooked from the very first chapter.
