What he desired was a place he couldn’t go to, and in the end, he had only been left with more questions than before; an even greater mystery troubled his mind.

Who was his mother really?

That was something that had started when Cassian had told him that she was the author of that book in which fairies and elves were mentioned, but what Maya’s brother had told him had only fueled his unease

even more.

Maya had an expression of anxiety and fear on her face. She feared for her brother’s safety, that the fairy queen would find a way to bind her brother to the fairyland, just like she was. Barto noticed her anxiety and fear. He looked at her and said, “Maya, I won’t go to the fairyland, so change that face. I like money, but not more than my freedom, so change that face.”

Maya felt a little calmer upon hearing her brother’s words, although she felt a certain sadness for

Alessandro. Upon seeing his disappointed face, she said to him, “Alessandro, I know you would do

anything to get those mirrors, but just like Abril is important to you, my brother is important to me, and I

won’t let him do something as risky as going to the fairyland. I hope you understand.”

“I understand, and I apologize for suggesting something that could pose a danger to your brother. That

wasn’t my intention. I just wanted to see Abril and hear her voice even for a moment. Her absence has

blinded my understanding. I’m sorry.”

Maya took off the pendant she wore around her neck. Barto instantly knew what his sister wanted to do, so he took off the pendant that matched hers. With a glance, she thanked him. They both extended their

necklaces, and Maya said,

“I would like to give you this. It’s not the same as the mirrors you wanted, but it’s something similar. With these necklaces, you’ll be able to communicate with Abril and hear her voice as if she’s beside you. You just have to give her one of the necklaces and use the other one.”

Alessandro hesitated for a moment about whether to take the necklaces Maya was handing him,

especially because they seemed important to her and her brother.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, you can take them, although I’m just lending them to you. When Abril comes back, I want them back. And I don’t even know if you can use them or not. The fairy queen told me that only fairies can use them, but I’m not very sure if that’s true. Even though she can’t lie, she’s very good at hiding the truth.”

“Thank you, I’ll try them on before sending them. If they don’t work, I’ll return them to you immediately.”

Alessandro approached Barto. “A moment before we arrived, did you tell Maya that knowing about the mirrors is something a human shouldn’t know? What did you mean exactly?”

Part I It’s Just A Loan

+25 Points

“I have already said it, Your Majesty. Those mirrors were not created by humans, so it is not something a human should know. That’s why I’m curious to know how Your Majesty found out about the existence of

those mirrors.”

“My mother wrote a book of stories for me and my siblings when we were children, and in one of those stories, she mentioned those mirrors. But I wasn’t sure if it was real.”

“I would like to read that book. Can I?”

“Of course, I will bring it right away.”

Alessandro left the room and went to look for the storybook his mother had written. Cassian took the

opportunity to greet his brother–in–law.

“Hello, Barto, long time no see. How have you been?”

Barto completely ignored Cassian and started talking to his sister.

“Maya, you should come back with me to Farell. Dad is eager to see you.”

Cassian said, “Maya can’t travel. She hasn’t been feeling well.”

Barto gave Cassian a cold look, then asked his sister with a sweet look, “What’s wrong, Maya? Do you

want me to call Oriol?”

Maya knew that a simple healer like Oriol couldn’t do anything for her. The only one who could help her

was Abril. She told her brother that.

“It’s not necessary, I’m fine already. It’s just that Cassian is exaggerating.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure.”

Cassian felt bad seeing that Barto was ignoring him. It was clear that his brother–in–law didn’t like him. He

asked, “Barto, why are you ignoring me?”

“Are you seriously asking me why?”

“Yes, I don’t understand why you changed your attitude towards me.”

“It’s simple. Because of you, my sister had to go through a lot and suffer a lot. She’s my family, and because of you, I’m far from her and can hardly see her. Do you need more reasons to know why I treat

you the way I do?”

“No, I don’t think so.”

“I thought so.”

Maya realized that her brother wasn’t surprised when Cassian said that she wasn’t feeling well, which clarified her suspicions. Her brother already knew that she had been sick, and she wondered, What else did her brother know? But out of fear of his response, she didn’t want to ask since Cassian was there in

< Partil it’s Just A Loan

front of them.

*25 Points

They stared at each other for a moment in an uncomfortable silence. Lissana, who was sleeping in Maya’s arms until now, woke up and stared directly at Barto. He did the same, and upon seeing her golden eyes,

he said,

“So she inherited Elven blood. I wonder if she has the same power as her mother?”

Alessandro entered at that moment and said, “She’s too young to know.”

“I know. It was just a question I asked myself.”

Alessandro handed him the book of tales and took his daughter in his arms. Lissana continued to look at

Barto as if she was curious about him.

Barto sat on the couch and started reading that book of tales. All the stories that appeared in that book left Barto very surprised.
