Maya and the others insisted that the place was dangerous, but no matter how much she looked, Abril couldn’t understand why. While she was stroking the fur of her winged horse, Maya approached her and

said, “I’ll teach you how to ride it, it’s not that difficult, you’ll see.”

Ethan jumped in again. “That’s dangerous, I’ll go with her.”

“That’s not possible, only one can ride at a time.”

“But…”

“Relax, she’ll be fine.”

Dantriel put his hand on Ethan’s shoulder and said, Calm down, don’t exaggerate things.”

Maya taught Abril the correct way to ride the winged horse and how to hold on when it took flight. Cassian had listened to Maya’s explanation, so he did the same. Everyone mounted their winged

horses. Ethan was the only one left.

“Do you plan to walk the rest of the way?”

Ethan didn’t respond. Maya thought, “Why is he so stubborn?”

“Hey, let me tell you that there’s a long way to the land of the fairies. At a brisk pace, it’ll take you half a day, and that’s if you don’t get lost, so why don’t you stop being so pigheaded and ride one of

these horses?”

“I don’t like being in the air depending on a fierce and wild animal that could drop me at any

moment.”

“Are you afraid of heights?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“Then stop complaining and get on one of those horses before they leave; they won’t be in this meadow all day, and we won’t wait for you to decide to ride one of those horses.”

Ethan seemed reluctant to ride one of the horses. Abril said to him while stroking the back of her horse, “I don’t think these horses are as dangerous as you think, why don’t you try to get close to

them?”

“Okay, I’ll try.”

Ethan replied, although he still didn’t look very convinced about doing it. Abril wondered if there was another reason why he refused to ride one of those horses. Ethan broke off a branch from one

from of the bushes and brought it closer to one of the horses; several of the horses moved away

|||

<

1/3

The Freedom of Flying

him, but there was one that approached, a brown horse. It began to eat from his hand; Ethan

stayed very still. Abril said to him, “Try to touch it.”

Claim

Ethan stroked the horse’s muzzle, and to his surprise, the horse let him. He looked at Abril, and she

said with a sweet smile, “You see, they’re not as fierce as you thought. It seems to like you, I’m sure

it’ll let you ride it.”

Ethan kept looking at her beautiful smile, and for a moment, it was as if he was seeing Sophia. Her smile, expression, and physique were almost identical, which is why he often confused them, but he knew that this was not his beloved Sophia but her daughter. He had been reminding himself repeatedly, but even so, he couldn’t help his heart from racing every time he saw her, every time he heard her voice and saw her smile.

Ethan got on the horse, everyone started to rise into the sky, and it was at that precise moment that Ethan remembered the real reason why he had refused to ride those winged horses. He hated heights; he felt as if his stomach dropped suddenly and then rose again.

“Damn it, why did I let myself get talked into this madness?”

The higher the horse climbed, the more terrified Ethan became. He clung tightly to the horse’s neck and closed his eyes, longing to be back on solid ground. He opened his eyes for a moment to see how Abril was doing; he was terrified and felt like his heart was in his throat, but for Abril, it was the complete opposite. She seemed to be reveling in the ride.

For the first time in her life, as she soared through the skies, Abril felt what true freedom was. She loved the sensation of freedom, the absence of limits and barriers, and the fierce joy she felt while flying. With the wind blowing her reddish hair back and caressing her cheeks, she wished she could stay that way forever.

She loved seeing every detail of the landscape. It was amazing to see everything from above, to view the world from another perspective. She could forget all she’d been through; the pain, the problems, the suffering, and live in the moment. She was intoxicated by the new sensations within her, drunk on the freedom that flying gave her.

“I wish I could stay this way forever.”

She thought as she extended her arms, feeling the air envelop them, the wind’s roar, and the sun’s gentle rays warming her. She was so absorbed in all of this that she didn’t hear Maya’s shouts,

“Abril, don’t do that! You could fall. Hold on!”

It wasn’t until after several shouts that she heard them and held onto the horse properly. For a moment, she had worried the others; they were scared she might fall, but even if it was selfish, she didn’t care. In reality, she longed to do it again, but she didn’t want to drive the others crazy. So she limited herself to watching the landscape, the mountains, the valleys, the colorful trees and flowers, and the meadows covered in grass that seemed as soft and pleasant as a carpet.
