Looking at him felt like staring at an endless chessboard, one where every move he made had already been calculated long before I even touched a piece. And no matter how many times I tried, or how much effort I put in, I knew I would never truly win against him.

The only chance I had of surviving this game was if I slowed down, studied the board, and gave it everything I had.

But should I?

Should I really give my all to a game where the ending was already decided? And even if I did, would there even be a happy ending waiting for me? I didn’t know. I didn’t want to know.

All I knew was that he agreed to help me.

For the first time in my life, someone was reaching their hand toward me. And for once, I was going to be shameless. I was going to grab that hand and use it. I would use Hades Sinclair, even if it meant losing what little humanity I still had left.

I bit my lip hard enough to taste blood, trying not to let my emotions slip through the cracks. My voice shook as I whispered, “Thank you.”

He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he leaned back, cigar between his fingers, those sharp blue eyes fixed on me like he could see every thought I had ever had, before finally setting the cigar down on the edge of the ashtray.

“Your brother is still alive.”

The words made me flinch, and my hands clenched so tight that my nails dug crescents into

my

skin.

He went on, unbothered, his gaze never leaving mine. “I know that’s been eating at you since you woke up. After all, you’ve been saying his name over and over in your sleep. So, don’t worry. Sebastian is alive. I transferred him to the Sinclair hospital. The best doctors in the country are with him now.”

For a moment, the world stopped.

I just stared at him, my heart pounding so loudly in my chest. Ever since I woke up, the question had been haunting, and terrifying me. Was Sebastian still alive? Was he lying in some cold morgue drawer while I was here, breathing? I was too afraid to ask. So I focused on Hades’ help instead.

But now I had my answer, Sebastian was alive, given the best treatment money and power could buy.

Hades didn’t have to do that. He had no reason to. He didn’t owe me or my brother a damn thing, but he did it anyway.

My vision blurred as tears filled my eyes.

I was right about him. I couldn’t read him. I never would be able to. But Hades Sinclair could read me like an open book.

My body moved before my mind could stop it. I shot up to my feet and ran to him. My knees ached, my head throbbed, but I didn’t care. I threw myself at him with all the force I had left, my arms wrapping tight around his neck.

Hades caught me instantly, as if he’d been waiting for me to fall into him. One of his hands slid around my waist, pulling me closer, while the other pressed boldly against my ass, holding me up like I weighed nothing at all.

I buried my face against his shoulder, clutching him desperately.

10:56 Tue, Jan 6

Chapter 92

“Thank you. Thank you so much, Hades.”

14

Vouchert

90

I couldn’t see his face, but I knew he was smiling. His arms tightened around me, pleased to be the one holding me. I let the tears fall, and he only drew me closer.

This was so stupid, Violet. I thought. Crying in the arms of your ex’s father. A man older than you, a man who could ruin the world and look bored doing it. A man everyone said was dangerous. And yet his chest was warm against my face.

I pulled back slightly and met his blue eyes. He watched me as if transfixed. His thumb brushed a tear from my cheek, then he reached up to sweep my hair from my forehead before leaning in and kissing me.

I let out a small, soft sound in the back of my throat and melted into him. The kiss wasn’t rough or demanding, it was gentle, as though he was moving at my pace, testing how much I would allow.

My hands slid around his chest, pulling myself closer, desperate to drown the ache and fear in the kiss. His hand squeezed my ass with more insistence.

He kissed me deeper, his tongue sliding against mine, slow at first, then rougher, and hungrier, until I couldn’t breathe. I clutched at his chest, but the phone on the table rang, shattering the moment.

I jerked back, breathless, lips tingling. For a moment, all I could do was stare at him. And I had never seen this man look more thoroughly satisfied.

Even for that short minute he’d made me forget. I managed a weak smile. “I have to answer that.”

He nodded, gently keeping me in place as I reached for the phone.

The name on the screen made me frown.

My aunt.

My mood darkened at once. Hades watched me in silence as I stared at the screen, but didn’t comment. I answered the call anyway. I wasn’t running from them anymore, if they tried anything, I’d face it head-on.

Her loud voice crackled through the phone. “Hiding, are we? When you know what you did is wrong, why wouldn’t you hide, you lunatic?”

“Hiding?” My tone was cold. “Shouldn’t your daughter be the one doing that?”

She scoffed, defensive in an instant. “You’re still spewing nonsense. Nobody believes you. How many times must I tell you? Riley didn’t do anything. Stop blaming others, for Christ’s sake, you’re too old for that, Violet.”

I didn’t say anything, arguing was pointless. She wasn’t the person I wanted to deal with right now. I was about to hang up when my aunt continued.

“Anyway, get your lazy ass back to the house right now. I know you’re scared I’ll call the police after yesterday, but I’ll let it slide for now, important people are asking for you.”

“What?”

“It’s about your brother’s case. I have no idea who’s backing you, but the police think their sons are involved. They want to arrest them. So come home this instant, Violet. Settle this with them, say you’ll drop the case, or those people will ruin your life. Even whoever’s backing you doesn’t measure up to them. Don’t be foolish.”

I turned and glanced at Hades. The cigar was back between his lips, and when he heard my aunt’s words he only smirked, amused. He tightened his hand on my waist and pulled me closer, tilted his head, and said, “Shall we find out, princess, how badly I can ruin them?”

10:56 Tue, Jan 6

Nights Burn With Regret — by Nathan Perez 92 Chapter 92 Chapter 92 Present time Violet X390 Hades Sinclair […]

[83

post-28008","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-craving-the-guardian-novel
["GET
