The rain drummed on the roof, drowning the city in noise.

The suit I wore fit perfectly, tailored as if it had been made for me. My gray watch caught the dim light inside the car every time I tapped my finger lazily against the door. On the surface, I must have looked calm, and indifferent. But the words on the file blurred together until they meant nothing.

“Stay away from me, Hades.”

Her words echoed in my head. It had only been a day, yet I couldn’t push her out of my mind. She had imprinted herself on

Today I sat through a meeting with some of my directors, men who would do anything for my full attention, but my mind kept wandering to her voice, her body, her lips, the way she looked at me when she smiled, the flush that spread across her face when she was angry, and those wide, doe eyes that stared at me with lust.

I couldn’t stop thinking about when I would see her again.

My finger stilled against the car door. I ran a hand through my hair, already distracted again.

From the front seat, Alec’s eyes found me through the rearview mirror. He thought he was subtle, but I had felt his gaze for a while now, studying me like I was some kind of rare beast.

He was amused. I wasn’t.

“When are you going to stop staring?” I asked flatly, not bothering to lift my gaze from the file.

“When are you going to stop behaving like a puppy begging for its owner’s attention?” Alec said, unbothered.

I looked up, one brow lifting. Anyone else would have swallowed their tongue for speaking to me that way, but he smirked, pushing further. “Who would’ve thought the great Hades Sinclair, the wild beast everyone fears, would be brought to his knees by a young woman who doesn’t even want him?”

His words echoed in my ears. My lips curled into a smile, but there was no warmth in it.

That action only fueled him. “I mean, I don’t blame her, you’re her ex-father, for one. That alone should have her running. And aside from that, you’re unpredictable, and dangerous. The kind of man most people would cross the street to avoid. Only a man out of his mind would meet a woman once and then ask her to marry him, and bear his children. Tsk.” He clicked his tongue. “If she were my younger sister, I’d have praised her før running away.”

I dropped the folders on the seat beside me, already losing interest in, them.

“Having fun?” I drawled.

Alec’s eyes lifted in the rearview mirror. He nodded, lips twitching with amusement. “Indeed. It’s nice to see you lose your mind over someone.”

I settled back against the seat, resting one arm on the door. Instead of frowning at him, or threatening him, I let a slow smile spread across my face. He wasn’t wrong. I liked losing my mind for her.

Ever since she left my house yesterday, I wanted to pull her back and lock the door, to keep her where she belonged-beside me, beneath me, on top of me, by any means necessary.

But I couldn’t, because she’d hate me for it. And while I enjoyed riling her up just to watch her get mad, the thought of her

10:5: Tue, Jan

Chapter 87

truly hating me was unbearable. So I waited, burying myself in work.

Deals, favors, the endless parade of people begging for my attention didn’t matter anymore. The things that once entertained me now only bored me. The world had lost its color without her in it.

She was the only thing worth chasing in this world.

I tilted my head slightly, eyes still on Alec through the mirror. “Tell me something. What would you call this?”

He paused, caught off guard by the question. “Call what?”

“The emotion I have toward her,” I said, curious. “Would you call it love?”

Even saying the word felt foreign. Love. It didn’t belong in my mouth. I wasn’t the type of man who fell in love, I had never even liked anyone before. To me, love was something humans tossed around carelessly, a word that never lasted. Maybe it didn’t make sense to me because no one had ever shown me what it truly meant.

He studied me, seeing how serious I was, before shrugging. “I have no idea. I’ve never fallen in love before.”

Typical.

I was about to reach for the files again, when he went on.

“I wouldn’t call it love. If I could define it better, I’d say it’s more like an obsession.”

I arched a brow but stayed quiet, letting him explain.

“It’s like when someone finds something too good for him. Something he has no right to, but he wants to claim it, keep it, ruin it for everyone else so no one else can touch it. That’s what obsession is. And that’s what you feel for Violet.” Alec said. “It can go two ways. Obsession can fade, or it can grow until it becomes something else. Maybe even love.”

I listened, each word sinking in until a smirk tugged at my lips.

This was why I kept Alec by my side. He knew me better than anyone. He could put into words the things I already understood deep down.

Obsession?

Yes. I already knew I was obsessed with her. As for anything beyond that? I supposed I would wait and see where my obsession led me.

Just then, my phone rang.

The sharp sound pulled me from my thoughts. I glanced at the screen, narrowing my eyes at the name flashing there.

Alec noticed. “Who is that?”

“Levi,” I said flatly.

“Didn’t you tell him to monitor Violet for you?”

I nodded, my gaze still locked on the glowing screen. My fingers didn’t move to answer right away. I only stared, my expression darkening as a thousand possibilities ran through my head.

“If he’s calling you, that means something must have happened.”

I didn’t answer. Slowly, I swiped across the screen, bringing the phone to my ear. “What happened?”

On the other end, Levi’s tone was tense, and rushed. “Mr. Hades, something happened-”

Chapter 87

My expression hardened instantly. Before Levi could explain. Alec murmured. “Huh. There’s someone at the gate.”

I almost ignored him, wanting to focus on Levi, until a familiar scent hit me.

My head snapped toward the gates in the distance. I didn’t need to strain.

I already knew who was there.

五

AD

Comment

Send gift

No Ads

Nights Burn With Regret — by Nathan Perez 87 Chapter 87 Chapter 87 Hades 桔花 90 E 50 Luthers […]

[83

post-28003","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-craving-the-guardian-novel
["GET
