His eyes widened the instant he saw Riley pinned beneath me, my hand gripping her throat, the knife hovering inches from her face. He looked at Riley, then at me, his expression a mix of shock and confusion.

“What… what is going on here?”

My grip on Riley loosened involuntarily. The second she felt it, she sucked in a ragged breath, coughing and gasping for air.

“Dad! Help me, she is trying to kill me!” She screamed, reaching for him, but my weight held her pinned to the floor.

Her father stared at her in disbelief, unable to believe what he was seeing. My aunt immediately rushed forward, clutching his arm.

“Look at this! She’s trying to kill our precious daughter. Didn’t I tell you? He kept staring at me with a strange look. “I asked you a question, Violet. What is the meaning of this?”

I stayed silent, my eyes flicking to my aunt instead. She tightened her grip on his arm, suddenly nervous under my stare. Finally, my voice came out low and cold.

“Precious?” I spat. “Is your daughter the only one allowed to be precious? My brother was everything to me. And your daughter didn’t even blink before she hurt him.”

“What?” My uncle’s voice dropped, his face darkening. “Riley hurt Sebastian?” He turned his head slowly toward her. “Is that true? Did you hurt him?”

Riley flinched as if struck. Her whole body trembled. She shook her head furiously, tears spilling down her cheeks. “No! Of course not! I didn’t hurt anyone. She’s lying! She’s insane, she just wants someone to blame for Sebastian, don’t believe her, Father. She’s a psychopath-”

Her words choked off as my grip tightened. She gasped, her face flushing red. I pressed the knife closer, the blade cutting

her skin.

“Leave my brother’s name out of your filthy mouth.” I hissed.

I raised the knife again, ready to strike, when a sudden kick slammed into me. The blow knocked me off Riley and sent me flying across the room. My body crashed into the tea table, my head striking the sharp edge. Pain exploded through my skull, my ear ringing so loudly it drowned out every other sound

Warm liquid ran down my face. I didn’t need to check. I already knew it was blood.

I looked up and saw Julian, my uncle’s secretary standing over me, his face hard with disgust. He had always hated me and Sebastian. I hadn’t even noticed him move, my focus had been on Riley, so when he sneaked up and kicked me in the back, it knocked the breath clean out of me.

I turned my head away from him and back to Riley. Harper and Nora were crowded beside her. Riley was coughing and

10:55 Tue, Jan 6

Chapter 85

crying, fingers at her throat.

“Oh my god, look at my neck, it’s bruised. Your daughter almost died and you still care about the person that caused this?”

Riley kept crying out. “Daddy, it hurts so much. I almost went to heaven.”

I smiled, there was no warmth in it. My head throbbed, my face stung, and I could feel my own blood, but none of that mattered. I pushed myself up. The knife felt heavy in my hand. I stared at Riley. “Heaven?” I said, voice flat. “How many times am I going to tell you that you’re going to hell?”

I advanced toward her, refusing to let her escape. She needed to feel the same pain Sebastian had endured. Riley staggered back, trembling with fear.

Before I could reach her, Julian reached down, grabbed my head, and smashed it against the floor. Pain exploded through me. I gasped. He leaned down close and hissed, “Stay down, or I will make you regret it.” He knocked the knife from my hand.

“That’s enough, Julian. You’ll hurt her.” My uncle yelled.

Julian spat back. “She almost killed Miss Riley. She should be put down before she does anything else.”

I ignored them. Pain was a small thing compared to what I felt. My glare fixed on Riley. I tried to pull free so I could get to her. “Let me go! Let me go this instant!”

Julian pushed harder and dug his weight into me. I felt the room tilt. My uncle tried to calm things. “Calm down, Violet. You will hurt yourself. Please, calm down and let’s talk about it.”

Tears streamed down my face.
