Especially after the car crash, and being the only survivor. I asked myself why me? Why not the others? But whenever I felt like slipping down into that hole, Sebastian was the one who pulled me out.

I pushed the hospital doors open, my chest pounding so hard I couldn’t breathe right. My hands wouldn’t stop shaking, and everything felt blurry. I shoved past people, muttering his name.

“Sebastian… I need to get to Sebastian.”

I barreled forward, blind to everything around me, until my shoulder slammed into someone. The man toppled, landing on the floor with a grunt.

“Fucking hell, are you blind?” He snapped, glaring up at me.

I didn’t stop. I had to keep going. I tried to push past, but the man jumped to his feet and blocked my way.

I’m fucking talking to you!” he snapped, stepping closer, his hand rising like he meant to grab me. Before fear could even sink in, another hand clamped around his wrist and yanked him back. He was about to shout, but the moment he saw Roman, he froze.

Roman towered over him. The look in his eyes shut the man down before the first word could even leave his mouth.

I didn’t pay attention to any of them.

I pushed forward, my feet carrying me to the door they’d pointed out. People stood around it, but they didn’t matter. My hand shook as it closed over the doorknob. I was just about to turn it when a voice stopped me.

“Are you Violet?” I turned around to see a police officer, he was looking at me with a frown. “Sebastian’s sister?”

“Yes,” I whispered. “W-what happened to my brother?”

The officer shifted uncomfortably, clearing his throat. “Your brother fell from a high building, Miss.”

The floor seemed to tilt beneath me. My breath came out jagged.

“A high building?” I repeated. “You mean… the school building?”

He nodded. My knees gave out, but Roman’s arms caught me just in time, keeping me upright.

“H-how is he?” My voice cracked. “How is my brother?!”

“The doctor is with him.”

As if on cue, the door opened. For a second, I caught a glimpse of Sebastian lying on the bed, surrounded by machines. My heart lurched, as the door shut again, blocking him from me, and a doctor stepped out into the hall.

I rushed forward, my hand catching the doctor’s sleeve. “Please+how is my brother? Is he okay?”

The doctor looked at me with pity before he spoke. “Your brother was badly hurt. He has a head trauma and internal injuries. He’s alive, but he’s in a coma. We did everything we could. Now it’s up to him to wake up. But the survival chance for him to regain consciousness is very low.”

For a moment, I stopped breathing. My chest clenched so tightly I thought I might collapse. My eyes widened, and if Roman hadn’t been holding me upright, I would have fallen to the floor right then.

10:54 Tue, Jan 6 J

Chapter 82

Did he just say Sebastian was in a coma?

No. No, that couldn’t be true. I shook my head hard,

90

155 chera

“You’re wrong.” I muttered, my voice cracking. “My brother is not in a coma. He’s probably just unconscious. You have to check again. Please, check him again! Run some tests, do something!”

The doctor sighed. “Miss, your brother is lucky to be breathing at all. With that being said, I know you are grieving, but there is another boy who is in need of a heart.”

I froze. My body went cold. He wasn’t just telling me my brother might never wake up, he was already asking me to hand his heart over to someone else.

“There is a seventy percent chance the boy would survive with a transplant. Your brother, on the other hand, has a forty percent chance of ever waking up. If you are willing-”

I didn’t even let him finish. I shoved him with both hands, hard enough that he stumbled back, catching himself against the wall. The people in the hallway gasped, everyone turning to stare at me.

“There is no way in hell I’m giving up on my brother!” I screamed, chest heaving, fists trembling at my sides. “Even if he has only a one percent chance of survival, I will never stop fighting for Sebastian. So forget about ever taking anything from

him.”

My glare burned into him, and even the sound of my own voice terrified me. I had never heard myself speak like that before.

The doctor opened his mouth to argue, but Roman stepped forward. “That is enough.”

The doctor’s jaw worked, his eyes flicking between me and Roman. Roman held his stare. “I wonder what gave you the idea to propose that to a patient’s guardian right after telling her her brother is in a coma.”

Shame flickered across the doctor’s face. He dropped his gaze. “You’re right. I apologize. I will give you time to think about it

Adrenaline coursed through my veins. I had no idea what to do. My world was collapsing, but one thing was clear, I would never give up on Sebastian.

I turned sharply to the police officer lingering nearby. He flinched.

“How did he fall?”

The officer swallowed. “What do you mean?”

I stepped closer, my eyes narrowing. “You know exactly what I mean.
