He suddenly asked, his tone serious and searching, \u201cIs there any chance we could go back to the way things were?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His words left Scarlett momentarily stunned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She stood frozen, it taking her a long moment to process the question.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She didn\u2019t understand what he meant, nor what he was trying to accomplish by asking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since she couldn\u2019t decipher it, she chose not to answer directly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She simply said, \u201cShouldn\u2019t we go in and see Vanessa?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vincent seemed startled himself, as if surprised by his own question.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After a pause, he replied, \u201cRight. Instead, she obediently handed Vanessa over to Vincent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As Vincent took the child, he gently nuzzled his cheek against hers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Feeling that her skin was no longer burning with fever, he felt a wave of relief.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa, resting her head on his shoulder, called out in a hoarse little voice, \u201cDaddy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A warm feeling spread through Vincent\u2019s chest. He patted her back softly and murmured, \u201cDaddy\u2019s here. I\u2019m right here.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa, dazed from the fever, still noticed Scarlett standing in the room.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even though she saw her, Vanessa didn\u2019t say a word.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vincent noticed the omission. He looked down at his daughter. \u201cMommy is here too, Aren\u2019t you going to say hello?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa glanced at Scarlett for a brief moment, then looked away,\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She buried her face deeper into Vincent\u2019s shoulder and mumbled, \u201cDaddy, I want Sabrina.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vincent adjusted his hold on her. Once the flu passed, she\u2019d be fine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Knowing Vanessa\u2019s condition wasn\u2019t serious, Scarlett felt no urge to intervene.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vincent glanced over at Scarlett. She stood there as if she were a detached observer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After a moment\u2019s thought, Vincent walked toward her, still holding Vanessa.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere,\u201d he said to her. \u201cHold her for a bit.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa seemed to sense what was happening. Suddenly, she found a burst of strength and began to struggle in Vincent\u2019s arms. \u201cNo!\u201d she protested, her voice gaining volume. \u201cDon\u2019t want mean mommy! I want Sabrina! I want Sabrina to hold me!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As she shouted, she began to kick and flail against Vincent\u2019s chest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vincent frowned, his eyes darkening with a flash of anger he was trying to suppress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But seeing Vanessa\u2019s pale, sickly face, he swallowed back any sharp words.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Seeing Vanessa\u2019s violent reaction, Sabrina stepped forward
