He glared daggers at the back of Scarlett’s head as if trying to burn holes through her skull with the intensity of his stare.

Even though she had already rationalized Vincent’s earlier intervention, Scarlett found herself unable to stop turning his words over in her mind.

How much genuine acceptance had there really been in his defense of her?

But then again, what remained between them now was barely worth quantifying.

The car window was partially lowered, allowing a cool night breeze to circulate. Combined with the lingering effects of the beer she had consumed, Scarlett’s head began to feel increasingly heavy and clouded.

No matter how much she obsessed over Vincent’s motivations, it ultimately felt pointless.

Resigning herself, she decided to cease the mental gymnastics. She leaned back against the headrest, closed her eyes, and feigned sleep.

The alcohol was beginning to affect her more strongly, causing her to frown slightly and even cough a little.

Vincent heard her cough. He glanced sideways, noted her pallor, and silently pressed the button to raise her window.

Hearing the window hum shut, Scarlett opened her eyes slightly. Her gaze fell upon the darkened glass, where she could just make out Vincent’s reflection.

He was focused intently on the road ahead, his profile sharp and handsome-still possessing the same captivating features that had once made her fall for him.

Even now, the sight of him could make her heart flutter faintly. But the sensation was fundamentally different now.

When the car came to a stop at a red light, Vincent turned to study Scarlett again. She was leaning against the window, and the arm exposed to the night air showed goosebumps-likely from the chill.

Vincent unfastened his seatbelt and leaned across, draping his jacket carefully over her legs.

Scarlett looked down at the garment, then pushed it away with polite detachment. “Thank you, but I’m not

cold.”

As she spoke, she slid the jacket completely off her legs.

The traffic light turned green. Vincent offered no verbal response, didn’t argue, nor did he retrieve his discarded jacket.

Seeing he made no move to reclaim it, Scarlett simply folded the jacket neatly and placed it on the console

between them.

She didn’t touch it again for the remainder of the journey.

1/3

hu, Jan

Chapter 103 The Unspoken Distance

Vincent noted Scarlett’s altered behavior but kept his observations to himself.

52

Finished

There was a time when merely being allowed to hold his jacket would have filled her with joy for weeks.

Now, she seemed entirely indifferent to anything associated with him.

Soon, the car pulled up before the Stewart Manor.

Lucy, who knew Vincent had gone searching for Luke, had been waiting anxiously by the entrance.

Her face finally relaxed into a smile when she saw the car arrive.

She opened the rear passenger door, and upon confirming Luke was safe and unharmed, she released an audible sigh of relief.

She reached out and ruffled his hair affectionately. “You little rascal, getting bold enough to ignore your brother’s and my calls now, are you?”

Luke swatted her hand away irritably. “Stop messing up my hair.”

Lucy rolled her eyes and was about to retort when she noticed several faint red marks on Luke’s cheek.

“Luke, what happened to your face?”

She reached out to examine the marks, but Luke slapped her hand away. “Got bitten by a dog.”

His tone was dripping with resentment. Without another word, he stormed into the house.

Lucy stood bewildered, casting a helpless glance toward Vincent.

Given Vincent’s temperament, it was entirely plausible he had disciplined Luke.

If Vincent had indeed struck him, Lucy privately thought Luke might have deserved it.

Vincent offered no explanation. He simply instructed Lucy, “Go inside and keep an eye on him. Ensure he doesn’t attempt to leave again tonight.”

Lucy didn’t dare press for details. “Understood, Vincent.”

Only after they had entered did Scarlett finally exit the vehicle..

She had consumed the beer rapidly, but its effects were already diminishing just as quickly.

Now, Scarlett felt significantly more clear-headed.

She stepped out and walked directly toward the house, completely failing to notice that Vincent had extended a hand as if to assist her.

Vincent’s hand remained suspended in the air for a moment, his fingers curling slightly before he let it fall back to his side. A soft, cold laugh escaped him.

Scarlett proceeded directly to her assigned room. Vincent first went to check briefly on Luke.

When Vincent finally entered their shared bedroom, his eyes immediately fell upon a blood-stained tissue

2/3

18:14 Thu, Jan 8

Chapter 103 The Unspoken Distance

lying on the bedside table.

Finished

He was momentarily taken aback. Scanning the room, he noticed the bathroom light was illuminated.

He walked over, forgetting to knock, and pushed the door open.

The room was filled with steam. Scarlett stood at the bathroom vanity, wrapped only in a towel that left her shoulders and legs exposed.

She possessed a naturally excellent figure-slender yet toned, the kind that would draw admiring glances even from other women.

She was bent forward, applying lotion to her skin. The towel provided minimal coverage across her chest, and Vincent froze momentarily at the sight.

Scarlett caught his reflection in the mirror and straightened up abruptly. “What do you need?”

Her voice was icy, devoid of the warmth and softness it once held for him. She was all sharp edges now, like a defensive hedgehog raising its quills.

Vincent couldn’t see any visible injuries on her, but he inquired nonetheless, “I noticed a bloodied tissue on the table. Are you hurt?”

Scarlett replied dismissively, “It’s nothing significant.
