She’d always had nice features, but ever since. Vanessa was born, she’d gradually stopped fussing over her looks. Most days, Vincent saw her with bedhead, running around nonstop just to keep up with their daughter.

Sabrina, though? She was a totally different ballgame. She always had her makeup done to perfection, and she never wore the same outfit two days in a row.

At least that’s what Scarlett noticed when she’d snuck a look at Sabrina’s social media. Every video Sabrina posted was a new look-sweet, edgy, sexy, polished, cute. She seemed to have an endless number of sides to her.

Scarlett even thought if she were a man, she’d probably be drawn to someone like Sabrina too.

“Scarlett?” Violet’s voice pulled her from her thoughts.

Scarlett smiled. “Yes, it really does look much better.”

Violet gave her shoulder an encouraging pat. “You should dress up more often and enjoy yourself. All those things you feel you’ve lost… in the grand scheme, they don’t really matter.”

Scarlett’s smile softened. “Yeah, I understand.”

“Alright then,” Violet said, “I’ll go finish getting ready. Well leave at eight o’clock sharp.”

Promptly at eight o’clock, the three of them headed out of Theron Manor.

When they got to the kindergarten, the place was already buzzing with energy. The area was packed with parents, and every kid was dressed in their nicest clothes.

Clara spotted some of her classmates, then waved proudly at the two women behind her. “This is my mom, and this is my aunt! Don’t you think they’re beautiful?”

She showed them off for a minute, and then the teacher called all the kids to gather. Parents started taking their seats while the teachers wrapped up their last-minute preparations.

The event kicked off with each class doing a different dance routine. ‘

Scarlett sat in the crowd, but her eyes kept wandering over to Vanessa.

Every class took their turn dancing. With the kids being so young, there were tons of stumbles and forgotten steps-but they all pushed through to the end

Vanessa danced too. She had makeup on today, and her hair was just pulled back in a ponytail, no accessories or anything. Even so, she seemed to be in areat mood, grinning the whole time she performed.

Watching Vanessa look that happy, Scarlett felt some of the tightness in her chest loosen up. No matter what Vanessa had said before, she was still her daughter. All Starlett really wanted was for her to be happy.

After the group dances, it was time for the solo acts. Kid who did well got a little sticker and a certificate,

Clara was doing a short skit-acting out a scene from airy tale.

1/3

09:30 Wed, Jan 7 u

Chapter 53 Stolen Spotlight

The kids finished their turns one after another. Before long, it was Vanessa’s turn.

Finished

Vanessa walked onto the stage alone. She stood there, scanning the audience as if searching for someone.

That was when the murmuring started among the crowd.

“Why is that child up there all by herself?”

“Doesn’t she have any parents here with her?”

“Oh, the poor thing… She looks like she’s about to cry.”

“Really, what kind of parent doesn’t show up for their child’s kindergarten event?”

Vanessa heard the whispers, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.

Scarlett heard them too-every word felt like a tiny needle pricking her heart. She was just about to stand up and go to Vanessa when Violet suddenly grabbed her arm. Violet gave her a look that said it all, then nodded subtly toward the right, telling her to look that way.

Scarlett followed her eyes and saw Sabrina. She was wearing a fancy designer dress and expensive high heels, and she showed up with a small group of people carrying a piano.

Vanessa caught sight of Sabrina and immediately started jumping up and down, yelling, “Sabrina! You’re finally here!”

Sabrina walked gracefully through the crowd in her heels, stepped onto the stage, and took Vanessa’s hand.

Once the crew set the piano down and brought over a chair, Sabrina patted Vanessa’s head and sat down at the piano.

Vanessa got into position, ready to dance to the music Sabrina would play.

Sabrina closed her eyes, took a brief, dramatic moment to compose herself, and then let her fingers descend upon the keys. The rich, beautiful sound of the piano quickly filled the entire kindergarten.

Vanessa, wearing her pretty princess dress, began to dance along with the music.

The piano piece was crisp and powerful, but little Vanessa didn’t quite have the skill to match it. She struggled to execute the dance moves properly.

Soon, her steps became messy, and her dancing started o look awkward and out of place.

Sabrina’s playing was technically beautiful, and her lavish gown was certainly eye-catching.

But this was, after all, a kindergarten event where the children were supposed to be the center of attention.

Vanessa’s movements fell more and more out of sync with the music, and her performance began to fall

apart.

The whispers in the audience started up again, this time with a different tone.

“That mother certainly knows how to command attention, doesn’t she? This is supposed to be the children’s day, but she’s practically hijacking the spotlight.”

2/3

09:30 Wed, Jan 7 u

Chapter 53 Stolen Spotlight

77%

Finished

“Honestly. The poor child is clearly struggling up there, and she doesn’t even pause.
