I pressed a hand to my mouth, trying to breathe\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>through it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou okay?\u201d Sarah asked, noticing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust nervous,\u201d I said, or maybe it wasn\u2019t a lie. I was nervous. Terrified, actually.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t see Tristan\u2019s face anymore because of his helmet, but I could see the way he sat on the bike, relaxed. Centered and completely in control.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This was his world, the place where he became something more than human, or and Alpha.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This was a place he could be himself. He could be Tristan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another horn, longer this time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then they were off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The bikes shot forward in an explosion of screaming engines and burning rubber.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tristan didn\u2019t get the best start, he\u2019d positioned himself in the middle of the pack, probably being careful for the first time in his racing career, and three riders immediately shot ahead.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But I could see what the crowd couldn\u2019t, the way Vic and Cole adjusted their positions to box Tristan in, how Marc, who usually raced clean, was suddenly riding way too close to Tristan\u2019s left side.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey ARE working together,\u201d Derek said, his voice hard. \u201cAll six of them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Can he handle it?\u201d I asked, hating how small my voice sounded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of course he can, I knew what he could do but that didn\u2019t stop the way my hands were shaking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018He\u2019s handled worse,\u201d Orion said, but even he sounded uncertain. \u201cBut he\u2019s riding different tonight. More careful.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of the babies,\u201d I whispered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They disappeared around the first turn and for those few seconds I could only hear engines echoing off concrete and metal, the sound building and layering until it was almost unbearable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My nausea was getting worse and I couldn\u2019t tell if it was pregnancy or fear.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then they came back into view and my heart stopped.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>1\/2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>1:24 pm P\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 323\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All six riders had Tristan surrounded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vic and Cole in front, riding side by side to block any way past. Marc and Jensen on either side, so close their handlebars almost touched Tristan\u2019s. Ted\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>more behind, blocking any escape.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was a moving cage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJesus Christ,\u201d Orion breathed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re trying to trap him,\u201d Derek said. \u201cForce him to ride at their pace, wear him down mentally.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill it work?\u2018 Sarah asked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Not a chance,\u2018 Derek\u2019s voice held complete certainty. \u201cThey\u2019re thinking like humans. Tristan\u2019s not human, not when he\u2019s on a bike.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They hit the straightaway and that\u2019s when it started.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Marc swerved left, on purpose, his bike coming within inches of Tristan\u2019s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A human rider would have panicked, would have braked or swerved and lost control, but Tristan didn\u2019t even flinch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His Alpha reflexes were faster than human sight and he shifted his weight, dropped his inside knee, and the bike responded like it was part of him. sliding through a gap that shouldn\u2019t have existed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The crowd roared.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see that?\u201d someone behind us shouted. \u201cDid you fucking see that?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible,\u201d another voice said. \u201cThat gap was too small.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot for him,\u201d a third voice said, almost reverent. \u201cNot for him.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Jensen was ready, cutting right to close the opening. Tristan accelerated hard, Derek\u2019s bike had power and Tristan knew exactly how to use it, and pulled even with the cage\u2019s front edge.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vic looked over and even through his helmet I could see the moment he realized Tristan was better than they\u2019d thought.
