Derek was sitting on the front porch steps, leaning back on his hands with his face turned up to the sun, he looked relaxed in a way didn\u2019t often see him, wearing jeans and a black t\u2013shirt with his sunglasses pushed up on his head,\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cHey,\u201d he said when he heard us approaching. \u201cHope I\u2019m not interrupting.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cNot at all,\u201d Orion said. \u201cCome on in.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Sarah carried Liam upstairs while Orion took Lily, both kids stayed asleep, and the rest of us settled in the living room and started\u00a0<\/p>\n
discussing about everything.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Then Derek looked at me and Athena sitting close together on the couch, her legs tucked under her and leaning against my side with my arm around her shoulders.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI heard congratulations are in order,\u201d he said. \u201cEngagement and twins, you two really don\u2019t do anything halfway.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cGo big or go home,\u201d Athena said with a grin.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cApparently,\u201d Derek said, shaking his head with a smile. \u201cThough I have to say, I\u2019m a little disappointed.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAbout what?\u201d I asked, confused.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWell,\u201d Derek said, leaning back in the armchair. \u201cNow that you\u2019re going to be a father, I\u2019m assuming you\u2019re done with racing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
I felt Athena tense slightly beside me and I knew we were about to have an interesting conversation.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah, I\u2019m done,\u201d I confirmed. \u201cCan\u2019t take those kinds of risks anymore, not with a family depending on me. But we\u2019re still partners,\u00a0<\/p>\n
always would be.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s what I figured,\u201d Derek said with a nod. \u201cSmart move, responsible move. Of course, partners for life.\u201d Then he turned to look at Athena. \u201cAnd I\u2019m assuming you\u2019re out too?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy would you assume that?\u201d Athena asked, her tone innocent but I could hear the mischief in it.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause you\u2019re pregnant?\u201d Derek said like it should be obvious.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cSo?\u201d Athena said. \u201cPregnant women can do lots of things.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
I turned to look at her. \u201cAthena.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat?\u201d she asked, looking at me with those wide innocent eyes that I was starting to realize meant trouble.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not racing while you\u2019re pregnant,\u201d I said carefully.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI haven\u2019t said I\u2019m racing while I\u2019m pregnant,\u201d she pointed out. I just said I haven\u2019t quit.\u2018\u00a0<\/p>\n
Those are the same thing,\u201d I said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAre they though?\u201d she asked.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Derek was grinning now, clearly enjoying where this was going, Orion was trying very hard not to laugh.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, they are,\u201d I said, my voice getting a bit sharper. \u201cYou cannot race while you\u2019re pregnant with our twins.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy not?\u201d she asked. \u201cIt\u2019s not like I\u2019d be doing anything dangerous.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cRacing is literally dangerous,\u201d I said. \u201cThat\u2019s the whole point.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u2018I\u2019d be careful,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019d be pregnant,\u201d I countered. \u201cWith twins.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m aware of that,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re my twins too.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThen you should understand why you can\u2019t race,\u201d I said, feeling my frustration building.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m a good driver,\u201d she said. \u201cBetter than you actually, I\u2019ve beaten you before.\u201d She was trying to be funny but I wasn\u2019t doing well with the joke, not when it involves her risking their lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n
And I know Athena, she\u2019d say like a joke but end up doing it.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Derek was full on laughing now and even Orion had given up trying to hide his amusement.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThis isn\u2019t funny,\u201d I said, looking at them.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a little funny,\u201d Derek managed to say between laughs.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, it\u2019s not,\u201d I said, standing up because I needed to move, needed to do something with the anxiety that was flooding through me. \u201cShe\u2019s talking about racing while pregnant with our children, how is that funny?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
I looked at Athena and saw she was biting her lip, trying not to smile, which made everything worse because it meant she wasn\u2019t taking this seriously.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI need a minute,\u201d I said, turning and heading for the stairs.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cTristan, Athena called after me but I was already halfway up.\u00a0<\/p>\n
