His hand closed around my throat and he slammed me against the wall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My back hit hard and pain radiated through me, but my front, my stomach, was protected by our bodies being pressed together.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot so tough now, are you?\u201d he said, his face inches from mine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t breathe. Black spots were dancing at the edges of my vision. My free hand scrabbled at his arm, trying to break his grip.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>while my knife hand was pinned between our bodies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I brought my knee up again but he\u2019d learned from last time. He blocked it with his own leg.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My vision was starting to tunnel. I was going to pass out if I didn\u2019t do something.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My hand found the gun tucked into my waistband, I pulled it free and pressed it against his ribs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet. Go,\u201d I managed to choke out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His eyes widened slightly but he didn\u2019t release me. \u201cYou won\u2019t shoot. Not with those kids in the house. One gunshot was risky\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>enough.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He was right. The sound, the danger to Lily and Liam. I couldn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But I could use it differently.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I brought the gun up hard, slamming the grip into his temple. His grip on my throat loosened and I hit him again, harder this time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He dropped and I fell to my knees, gasping for air. My throat felt like it was on fire and my vision was still spotty.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I heard Sarah grunt and looked over to see her surrounded by three men now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She was still fighting, still holding them off, but I could see she was tiring. Blood was running down her arm from a deep cut, and she\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>had a split lip.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But she was still standing. Still fighting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still protecting us.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of the men managed to grab her from behind, pinning her arms. Another raised his fist to strike her face.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>1\/3\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>12:36 Mon, Jan 19 M\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 270\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo!\u201d I screamed, trying to stand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>62\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Sarah was faster. She threw her head back, connecting with the nose of the man holding her. I heard the crunch of breaking bone\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>and he released her with a scream.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She spun and kicked the other man in the chest hard enough to send him stumbling backward.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The third man, the one I\u2019d shot in the leg, was limping toward me with murder in his eyes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I forced myself to stand, using the wall for support. Everything hurt. My throat, my shoulder, my back where I\u2019d hit the wall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But my stomach was okay. The baby was okay.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I had to keep it that way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The man I\u2019d knocked down was starting to get up too. And across the room, the men Sarah had been fighting were regrouping.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We were outnumbered and we were tiring. Even with all our training, even fighting as hard as we could, there were too many of them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sarah came to stand beside me, both of us breathing hard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou okay?\u201d she asked, not taking her eyes off the men.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m fine,\u201d I said. \u201cYou?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been better,\u201d she admitted. \u201cBut I can keep going.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kids,\u201d I said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have to keep them away from the kids.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The four men were advancing on us again, spreading out to surround us.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that all you\u2019ve got?\u201d the first man taunted, blood still dripping from his shoulder and ribs. \u201cI expected more from an Alpha\u2019s\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>family.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not done yet,\u201d Sarah said, raising her knife again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But I could hear the exhaustion in her voice, could see the way she was favoring her right side.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I raised my own knife, though my hands were shaking from adrenaline and fatigue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My wolf was stirring inside me, restless and agitated. She wanted out.
