My heart started beating faster. \u201cWhat kind of information?\u00a0<\/p>\n
The kind you need to hear in person. Can I come over?\u00a0<\/p>\n
I looked towards Orion who was watching me.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s Derek,\u201d I said. \u201cHe says he has information to share about what happened.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Orion looked up at me with tired eyes. \u201cTell him to come over. We should discuss it here.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
I raised my eyebrows in surprise. Orion never let outsiders into his house. Ever. His home was family only.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can\u2019t leave Athena alone,\u201d he explained through our mindlink when he saw my expression. And we can\u2019t take her anywhere until we know more about what\u2019s happening to her.\u201d I nodded\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cCome over. I\u2019ll text you the address.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
I\u2019ll be there in twenty minutes,\u201d Derek said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
While we waited, I felt like pacing around the living room but I stayed still, just the way Athena did too. Sarah made coffee and Orion sat in his chair with his head in his hands. None of us talked about what Derek might have found, but I could tell we were all thinking about it.\u00a0<\/p>\n
When the doorbell rang, my stomach jumped. Sarah went to answer it and brought Derek into the living room. He looked grim and tired, like he hadn\u2019t slept much either.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cHow are you doing Ath?\u201d he asked first thing.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cMuch better she responded in a low voice.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat did you find?\u201d Orion asked immediately.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Derek sat down on the couch and pulled out a thick folder. \u201cI\u2019ve been digging into Daxon\u2019s background since we got back. Going through old pack records, talking to people who knew him before he went rogue.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
W\u00a0<\/p>\n
He opened the folder and spread some papers across the coffee table. \u201cDaxon wasn\u2019t just after Athena because she rejected him. He was after her specifically because of the power.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, they had a history. He\u2019d be an asshole towards her when they were mate\u201d I said with anger.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He didn\u2019t treat her well when they were together, so what did he want?\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, you don\u2019t understand.\u201d Derek looked at each of us. \u201cHe knew about the power before any of us did. He knew what she was carrying inside her. But he got his information wrong.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Sarah leaned forward. \u201cHow is that possible? What information?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Because he and his dad had been hunting people like her for wear. Tarek sand. Pengla from feiturs wh down bloodlines and trying to find someone who still carried the active gene\u00a0<\/p>\n
My blood went cold. \u201cHow many people did he kill?\u00a0<\/p>\n
At least twelve that I can confirm, Derek said quietly. Maybe more. All of them from families with the old blondlin Athena has. None of them could actually use the power.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Orion\u2019s face had gone white. \u201cIf he thought I was a carrier then, he thought my mom was ton, he said quietly like he was picking\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat?\u201d Sarah asked.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOur parents,\u201d Orion said, looking at Derek. \u201cYou\u2019re saying their deaths weren\u2019t random. My stomach dropped.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Our parents had been murdered? By Daxon\u2019s family?\u00a0<\/p>\n
Derek nodded grimly. \u201cIt was a trap. He\u2019d caught Athena to get to you.\u201d The room went completely silent. I could hear my own heartbeat pounding in my\u00a0<\/p>\n
We all looked at him shocked, well except Athena.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was going to kill you\u201d Derek continued. \u201cAfter he figured out how to steal your power. He wanted to take it for himself and use it to build an army of wolves who could drain life force on command.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s why it got so angry,\u201d I said suddenly. The pieces were clicking together in my head. \u201cIn the cave, when Daxon was threatening to kill Orion. The power inside her wasn\u2019t just responding to her fear. It was protecting itself.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
