Sarah went upstairs to make some calls. Orion locked himself in his home office. Never.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She gave me a sad smile and disappeared upstairs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I sat alone in the living room and tried not to think about what would happen if this got worse. If whatever was inside her got stronger. If she stopped\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>being able to fight it off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the thoughts came anyway. They crawled into my head and made themselves at home. What if she hurt someone by accident? What if she hurt me?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What if she hurt herself trying to stop it?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I heard Athena moving around upstairs. The floorboards creaked as she paced back and forth. She was probably doing the same thing I was \u2013 thinking\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>about all the ways this could go wrong.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sarah came back downstairs an hour later. She looked tired.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything all right?\u201d I asked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I called in sick to work for the rest of the week,\u201d she said. \u201cI can\u2019t leave her right now.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about the kids? When will they get back?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re staying until we figure this out. I told them Athena has the flu.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More lies. We were all getting good at lying.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s scared, Sarah said. \u201cShe\u2019s terrified of what she might do.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I nodded. We were all terrified.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe I should try to talk to her,\u201d Sarah said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wanted to be alone.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes being alone is the last thing someone needs.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sarah went upstairs. I heard her knock on the guest room door, heard Athena\u2019s muffled voice telling her to come in.
