Not just the physical part, though that had been incredible, but more of him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More of the way he looked at me like I was the only woman in the world. More of the way he whispered my name against my skin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I knew It was dangerous, of course I knew and that was why I shoved the thought off immediately.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I was cracking eggs into a bowl when I heard his bike roar to life outside. My hands stilled, confusion washing over me. Tristan never left this early on a Sunday. He had nowhere to go, no work obligations, no meetings that couldn\u2019t wt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Where was he going?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he needed to pick something up from the store. He\u2019d be back soon. Tristar wouldn\u2019t just leave me alone, not when he\u2019d made such a big deal about\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>always protecting me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even if I didn\u2019t need his protection, I\u2019d gotten used to having him around. His presence had become as natural as breathing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And part of me had started to trust that he wouldn\u2019t hurt me again like he had file years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wouldn\u2019t try it,\u2018 Claire said, her voice appearing in my head for the first time in days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere have you been?\u201d I snapped at her mentally. \u201cAren\u2019t you supposed to be with me always?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you were screaming Tristan\u2019s name last night, did you think about me?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>1\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Heat flooded my cheeks even though no one could see me. She was right, of course. I\u2019d been completely lost in him, in us, in the way he d made me feel\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>alive again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I don\u2019t blame you,\u2018 Claire continued. \u201cTristan is\u2026.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I cut her off before she could finish. I set two plates on the dining table and waited, checking my phone every few minutes for a text that never came. An hour passed, then two. The eggs grew cold, the toast turned stale, and still no sign of him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I ate alone, each bite tasting like disappointment.
