It was late afternoon as I walked down the sidewalk toward the Royal Hospital to start my evening shift. I\u2019d be in time to serve dinner, give evening medication to my patients, and then help them settle in for the night.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t see how that\u2019s a big deal,\u201d I replied. \u201cThose rumors were going around well before I left. Why would Nolan be upset about it now?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, that\u2019s exactly why-because you\u2019re gone. You have to remember, Ellie, everyone here in Silver Fang thinks you were kidnapped or something. It\u2019s not like you just moved away. So the fact that Nolan\u2019s mistress is flaunting her expensive jewelry and acting like they\u2019re engaged-it\u2019s rubbing people the wrong way,\u201d Rae explained gently. 1\u00a0<\/p>\n
I frowned deeply as I considered her words. \u201cI hadn\u2019t thought about that,\u201d I confessed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s just one more reason it\u2019s been so difficult without you here,\u201d Rae sighed dramatically. \u201cI can\u2019t talk to anyone about how much I miss you, because then they start acting like I\u2019m grieving and it gets all awkward and uncomfortable. I mean, it\u2019s nice knowing that people care that you\u2019re gone. Some people at least seem to feel bad about the way they treated you while you were here.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know, that doesn\u2019t really make me feel better,\u201d I replied.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cNolan certainly feels bad,\u201d Rae added. \u201cEven after so many months, he\u2019s still a wreck.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cLance told me the same thing, and I just can\u2019t picture it. I mean, he didn\u2019t like me-let alone love me. And it\u2019s been what, eight months since I left? Why would he still be upset? He was planning to leave me anyway.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause he thinks you\u2019re dead, Ellie,\u201d Rae said matter-of-factly. \u201cHe thinks someone murdered you, probably to get to him. He feels guilty, I\u2019m sure.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI just can\u2019t picture him like that,\u201d I repeated. \u201cNot that he didn\u2019t have his moments-especially toward the end\u00a0<\/p>\n
