The kingdom was in an uproar for days after the announcement. The Alpha King\u2019s retirement came so suddenly that it was unavoidable. There hadn\u2019t even been rumors about it, and preparations had to begin immediately.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A successor had to be found, and since the King had no children, it would be decided by a council of the kingdom\u2019s Alphas. They would choose through an election.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In order to get the support of the council members, it was important to have popular support throughout the different territories. It would be a stretch to call it a popularity contest, but that was certainly a factor.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A shift in leadership like this could destabilize the entire kingdom if the wrong person were put on the throne, and no one wanted that.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The press was having a field day with it. I could hardly leave the house without being cornered and questioned about my intentions-if I had plans to run, and if not, who I would support, and things of that nature.\u00a0<\/p>\n
I was used to attention to a degree, and the Beta did a good job screening the reporters who were clamoring for interviews.\u00a0<\/p>\n
I hadn\u2019t made a decision on my plans yet, so I wasn\u2019t ready to make any kind of announcements. Still, that didn\u2019t stop them from asking, and I was hardly the only one being harassed for a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It was annoying, to say the least, that the Alpha King hadn\u2019t given any of us a heads-up about this announcement meant we could have coordinated a response.\u00a0<\/p>\n
We could have made sure that this type of panic in the territories wasn\u2019t out of hand. Instead, we were all scrambling, uncertainly giving the press far too much room to speculate\u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n
Not just speculate, but harass anyone with a connection to an Alpha family, anyone who could technically qualify\u00a0<\/p>\n
for the role.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Third Person POV\u00a0<\/p>\n
Cassian and Lance were walking down the street downtown. They\u2019d gone out to get lunch and get a little space from the chaos of the pack house. Unfortunately, the chaos seemed to have followed them.\u00a0<\/p>\n
As they stepped out of the restaurant, they noticed a group across the street that perked up at their appearance. The two of them attempted to ignore it.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Attention wasn\u2019t entirely new for them, being members of prominent Alpha families, but as they walked down. the sidewalk, it quickly became apparent that this group was, in fact, following them.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cReporters,\u201d Lance muttered, the irritation obvious in his voice.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cSeems that way,\u201d Cassian agreed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cDo we keep going and ignore them, or should we find somewhere to duck in?\u201d Lance asked, glancing at Cassian.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re most likely not going to stop following us,\u201d Cassian said with a sigh. \u201cThey\u2019ll want some kind of comment about the news.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd they never take \u2018no comment\u2019 as a comment,\u201d Lance said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s almost ironic,\u201d Cassian agreed, \u201cbut it\u2019s still the correct response.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou hear that?\u201d Lance asked. \u201cThey\u2019re speeding up\u2013get ready to have a camera shoved in your face.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAgain? You know, you never quite get used to it.\u201d Cassian kept his eyes forward as the reporters caught up to them, quickly surrounding them on the sidewalk.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The jumble of questions they shouted was tangled and difficult to follow, which only served to annoy Lance more than he already was.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cSpeak clearly if you have something to say,\u201d Lance snapped.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIs Alpha Nolan planning to run for the throne?\u201d one of the reporters asked, shoving his phone into Lance\u2019s face.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat about Alpha Alaric?\u201d another asked, sticking her microphone out towards Cassian.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cNo comment,\u201d Cassian replied, his tone carefully neutral.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cNolan\u2019s already explained that he hasn\u2019t made a decision,\u201d Lance said, doing his best not to glare directly into the camera.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWould you support Nolan if he did decide to run?\u201d the reporter pressed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not my support he\u2019ll need to worry about if he decides to run for King. It\u2019s the will of the people. My opinion as his brother is hardly relevant,\u201d Lance said dismissively.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cBut surely you know Alpha Nolan better than anyone,\u201d the reporter continued. \u201cHe\u2019s so cold and calculated with the press. You\u2019re his younger brother-you\u2019ll know his temperament better than anyone else.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
