I stared at the beta who was standing near the doorway with a serious expression on his face. His shoulders were tense and his eyes were avoiding mine, showing his discomfort.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy is it that people keep bothering me with useless information about what Ellie is doing in her own free time?\u201d I demanded.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cSir, she\u2019s with your brother. Do you know about his parties? It-\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI know that there\u2019s absolutely nothing going on between Ellie and Lance. And I know that there\u2019s nothing happening at those parties that I need to be concerned about. Are you insinuating that I-your Alpha-don\u2019t have control over my own family?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course not, Alpha,\u201d the beta responded nervously.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThen stop wasting my time,\u201d I said, letting a soft warning growl rumble in my chest.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, Alpha.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The beta turned and quickly left the room.\u00a0<\/p>\n
I ran my fingers through my hair, irritated by the interruption but not surprised. Ellie was getting a lot of attention from men recently. She was more confident, more outgoing, more present in the community, so it wasn\u2019t surprising in any way.\u00a0<\/p>\n
As much as she annoyed me, there had never been any doubt that she was attractive.\u00a0<\/p>\n
But the idea that Lance would be interested in her? That was absurd.\u00a0<\/p>\n
And not the kind of thing I needed to waste my time worrying about.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Lance would be the last one I\u2019d ever expect to develop an attraction to Ellie.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Keeping an eye on Cassian was easy enough.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Getting him to open up was an entirely different matter.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He seemed more than willing to hang out with Lance, spend time together, and meet his friends, but when it came to getting Cassian to talk about anything other than business, it was like pulling teeth.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Honestly, Lance had thought Nolan was just being paranoid about the Moonstone pack being up to something.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Until he noticed just how evasive Cassian could be.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The two of them were in the pack house courtyard, hanging out in the back. Lance had figured out pretty quickly that they had very different personalities and that Cassian was slow to warm up, but he was pretty sure he was starting to like him.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWish you could\u2019ve made it to the party last night,\u201d Lance said. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to experience one of my yacht parties before you go back to your own pack lands.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not really my idea of a good time,\u201d Cassian said skeptically. \u201cI\u2019m not much of a drinker or dancer.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cCome on, it\u2019s fun. I promise. Even Ellie ended up having a good time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah. It\u2019s the first time she\u2019s ever been to one. I mean, she was there for completely unrelated reasons, helping a friend out, but she still came and ended up enjoying herself!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cInteresting,\u201d Cassian said thoughtfully. \u201cI don\u2019t know that I could picture her in that kind of environment.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, she\u2019s full of surprises,\u201d Lance said with a smile. \u201cYou know, she\u2019s pretty impressive\u2026 for a rogue.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know\u2026 she doesn\u2019t seem like a rogue to me,\u201d Cassian said. (2\u00a0<\/p>\n
There was an odd intensity to his words, and Lance noticed how he was maintaining eye contact more than usual. He turned his full attention to Cassian, taking note of his sudden shift in demeanor.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat do you know about her? Before she met your brother?\u201d Cassian pressed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cNothing. There\u2019s nothing to know,\u201d Lance replied.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat do you mean by nothing to know?\u201d Cassian asked skeptically.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI mean Ellie was an orphan. A rogue,\u201d Lance explained. \u201cI\u2019ve never actually talked to her about her past, but I know from Nolan that she has very few memories of her childhood or anything that happened before the orphanage.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
