\u201cWhat is this talk about poison?\u201d he asked, his tone filled with barely contained fury, the look he gave me full of concern \u2013 so much so that it shocked me.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Nolan\u2019s jaw tightened. I knew he didn\u2019t want to do anything to jeopardize his deal with Moonstone. I took Nolan\u2019s arm, holding it like I had earlier, and smiled sweetly at Alaric.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s nothing to be concerned about,\u201d I said calmly. \u201cNolan is just being overly cautious. The food tasted off to me, and he insists we have it tested, just to make sure there\u2019s nothing wrong. We don\u2019t want the guests to get food poisoning if something is spoiled.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Nolan went stiff. I could tell from his body language that he was shocked I\u2019d try to manipulate him like this \u2014 but he couldn\u2019t call me out, not with everyone watching.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI see,\u201d Alaric said, though he looked unconvinced.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s right,\u201d Nolan said, his smile tight and forced. \u201cJust being cautious. We\u2019ll have the servants check the food.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
He grabbed my plate from the waiter and kept his grip on my arm as he pulled me into the kitchen. He slammed the plate down, glaring at the head chef. \u201cTest it,\u201d he ordered.\u00a0<\/p>\n
I watched with interest as the staff moved around the kitchen, obviously uncomfortable under Nolan\u2019s icy stare. I recognized some of them \u2013 I knew they lingered around Felicity.\u00a0<\/p>\n
I tried to watch carefully, but it was hectic in the kitchen, and it was entirely possible they were hiding something, covering up what they\u2019d done.\u00a0<\/p>\n
And that suspicion was confirmed when they reported back to Nolan a few minutes later.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with it, sir.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s not true!\u201d I insisted. \u201cIt tasted bitter.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Nolan gave me a strange look, and I saw his eyes flick down to my stomach. My face turned red.\u00a0<\/p>\n
