Darius had his arm under her neck as she pressed against his chest, his face peaceful in sleep.

Her face was buried in the crook of his neck, fingers buried in his hair and the others splayed on his chest.

They looked perfect together. Natural. Like this was where they both belonged.

I’d just walked into something I shouldn’t have seen.

The air left my lungs all at once. The room spun around me, everything going fuzzy at the edges. I grabbed the doorframe to keep from falling, my wedding ring clicking against the wood.

The sound woke Darius up.

His eyes opened slowly, then went wide when he saw me standing there. He jerked away from Vivienne so fast he nearly fell off the bed.

“Sera! You’re home!” He scrambled to his feet, running his hands through his messy hair. His shirt was wrinkled, his pants undone at the waist, he looked almost confused, his eyes darting between Vivienne and me before realization dawned on his features.

“I can explain. This isn’t what it looks like!” He began, holding out a hand as though he could stop my thoughts from spiraling. His other hand reached for his pants, fixing it as it hung low on his waist, his eyes wide and never leaving mine.

As if he could hide the obvious truth.

Vivienne stirred on the bed, making a soft sound as she woke up. When she saw me, her eyes got big and she sat up quickly, smoothing down her dress.

“Oh! Sera, I’m so sorry. I must have fallen asleep.” She pressed her hand to her forehead, looking dizzy. “I came over to give Luna a piano lesson, but I started feeling faint again. Darius was just helping me,” She sighed, her voice wispy as she rose slowly from the bed, not looking the least bit bothered by what I had just walked into.

I couldn’t speak. Couldn’t move. My throat felt like it was closing up, making it hard to breathe. The betrayal of seeing them sleeping together hurt more than I thought it would.

The pain seemed to burn a hold in my chest, creating hurt unlike anything I’d ever felt.

“Nothing happened, Sera…she collapsed when I was teaching Vivienne and I…and I had to help her!” Darius repeated, he took quick jerky steps forward, as if he feared I would disappear in the next second, I took steps back, refusing to close the distance between us.

“I…I helped her so she could rest. I must have dozed off while making sure she was okay,” He spoke in a strange and urgent tone, as though he didn’t believe his own words, his hands reached for me, he’d almost tripped in his urgency but I stepped away again.

The words sounded hollow. Empty to me.

1/3

Chapter 5 Dont Go

+25 Bonus

“Nothing happened, Sera. I swear to you, nothing happened.” His voice was getting desperate now, pleading.” You have to believe me!” He took large strides forward, closing the distance in just two steps.

I stepped back to avoid his touch.

Before I knew it, tears were streaming down my face.

I wanted to believe him. Part of me was screaming to believe him, to accept the explanation and pretend everything was fine. But the other part of me, the part that had been broken so many times before, couldn’t take

anymore.

I thought I would come back and have a proper conversation with my husband, it was foolish of me to come here…it was foolish of me to waver and think perhaps Darius was a man of his word.

“I need to go.” I couldn’t stay here anymore. Go where?” Darius stepped closer, but I backed away again. “Sera, please. Let me explain properly. We can talk about this.”

“There’s nothing to talk about.” My voice was shaking, but I forced the words out. “You made your choice. Again.

11

He let Vivienne sleep on his bed.

He chose to take care of Vivineee and failed to keep his promise of picking me up.

I should had known that early. I should had known that in his heart Vivienne was always important than me.

And now here I was, crying over the fact that now he even slept with her in our house.

I turned and walked toward the stairs on legs that felt like they might give out. Behind me, I could hear Darius following, saying my name over and over.

Luna. I needed to see Luna before I left. But as I got closer to the playroom, I could hear her laughing at something on her tablet. Happy sounds. Innocent sounds.

If I went in there crying, if she saw me falling apart, it would scar her. She was only four. She didn’t need to see her mother breaking into pieces.

I grabbed my suitcase from the front hall instead. My hands were shaking so bad I could barely get a grip on the

handle.

“Wait, please.” Darius’s hand reached for my wrist. “Sera, please don’t go.” He pulled me towards him, locked me tightly in his arms.

I could feel his heart racing, beating almost as fast as mine. I could feel the warmth of his skin seep into mine through his shirt.

I could feel his hot breath against my neck.

I struggled hard in his chest.

The thought of Vivienne being in his arms the same way further deepened my disgust.
