Joseph 163

163 His fear.

Leilani.

“How are you doing, beautiful?” Keisha sassed, snapping me out of my reverie, and when I turned to look at her, I couldn’t help but notice the very smug grin on her face.

She continued; “I am sorry I haven’t given you anything to eat. I know you must be very hungry right now, but I need you very weak and I don’t think the tranquilizer or the silver holding you down can do anything.”

Her words made me frown slightly because in truth, I didn’t understand why she would go to these lengths just to weaken me. In confusion, I tilted my head to the side, watching her carefully and before I could stop myself, I asked the only question I could think of:

“Why are you doing this?”

And at my words, Keisha stopped what she was doing, turned to look at me and smiled again. Her brazen attitude made me so mad that I wanted to punch right through her throat.

And as if realizing the kind of thoughts I had, her smile widened as she drawled, “I do not plan to hurt you, Leilani. Gosh, I just want us to have a conversation.”

“And what kind of conversation do you want us to have?” I seethed, “…what kind of conversation entails chaining me to a chair?”

My voice came out sharper than I intended, but now, I was too mad to care. Too frustrated by everything happening to control my tone.

I rolled my aching shoulders and winced slightly when pain lanced through my shoulder blades. Goddess, I was in so much pain.

“I know you’re a freak.” She said suddenly, snapping me out of my thoughts.

My eyes widened, not in surprise, but in the way she had said it. I shrugged; “And what does that have to do with you?”

“You’re a hybrid, just like me.” She continued, ignoring my sarcastic tone; And something about those words had me freezing momentarily.

Keisha stopped to look at my face, and as if satisfied with my current confusion, she added; “You’re a Lycan and a werewolf. And I know that because I am one too.”

I rolled my eyes.

12:55

1/5

163 His fear

“However, what I don’t understand is why it feels like you’re stronger than I am. And why Jarek isn’t as repelled by you as he is by me.”

I knew that laughing right now was a terrible idea, but I couldn’t help it, especially after listening to the garbage that she had to say. Her gaze darkened when she took in my face, and the more I laughed, the angrier she became. She growled;

“What’s so funny?!”

“You!” I shot back immediately. “You sound surprised that Jay isn’t repelled by me, but for some reason, you never stopped to imagine that maybe… just maybe it’s because I

didn’t kill his sister.”

At my words, her face darkened so much, there was little difference between it and the night sky. She extended her claws as she walked slowly towards me, her voice dropping a few notches as she seethed; “I didn’t kill Grace!”

“Well, she wouldn’t be dead if you didn’t-” I began to say but stopped when she forcefully grabbed my face, digging her claws into my chin.

Tears burned at the corners of my eyes and I shuddered when the smell of my blood seeped into my nostrils.

“I see he told you about it.” She spat.

I do not know why but for some reason, I wasn’t afraid of her. Hell, I knew what she could do. I knew how dark and twisted most lycans were, but still, I wasn’t scared.

“Are you surprised?” I asked cockily, tilting my head to the side, despite the pain searing through my skin. Her fingers dug deeper into my flesh, breaking skin, and the more I bled out, the more satisfied she looked.

Suddenly, she let go of me and leaned away, her smug smile still plastered across her face as she continued; “I really do not want to hurt you, Leilani. I’m only doing this because Jarek is refusing to see me or talk to me. He’s rejected me. He wants me to return to Gerald and Grace but I don’t want to. I don’t want to ever leave his side. I don’t want to lose him to yo—”

“I think you should be saying all this to him, not me.” I spat, and as soon as the words left my mouth, her face darkened again.

In the blink of an eye, she smacked my face so hard that my head lolled to the side, but just as I was about to curse at her, I felt something in my head. I winced.

12:55

2/5

163 His fear.

It was a voice.

A male’s voice.

“Leilani, where are you?”

It took me a moment to recognize the voice, and another to understand how it was possible for me to hear him in my head… but Zevran, thinking that I was probably unconscious or too hurt to respond, began to sound panicky. He rasped; “LEILANI!”

“How are you in my head?” I snapped back, but instead of responding to my question, he asked instead;

“Where are you?”

For a solid ten seconds, I was stunned into silence, shocked that he was sounding so worried… so desperate. I contemplated blocking him off, but upon remembering how dire the situation was, I briefly described all I could see. I also briefly told him about Keisha, and to my utmost surprise, he replied

“I think I have an idea where that may be, and if I am right, I’ll be there in a few

minutes!”

He sounded reassuring, genuine even, but I didn’t respond. I simply let the mind link go silent and closed my eyes, hoping to stall Keisha for as long as I could.

I do not know for how long I stayed there, quietly waiting for rescue or for Keisha herself to untie me, but when she returned moments later, she didn’t look like she was here to let me go. In fact, it seemed as though she had finally made the resolve to hurt

Clasped in her gloved hands was a gun. I couldn’t see what kind it was due to the lightning, but I could see the shiny silver surface as it caught the tiny light seeping through one of the cracks in the ceiling.

Her eyes met my face for a brief second and she bared her teeth at me. My heart raced as I watched her cross her arms over her chest. She spat; “Not so cocky anymore, are you?”

“I’m just tired,” I replied truthfully, “…and I’ve decided to sleep, rather than waste my time talking to a woman who is so scared, she has to tie me up first before she can have a simple conversation with me.”

Her nostrils flared at the insult. And that was what I wanted… to get under her skin. To

12:55

3/5

163 His fear.

make her make a mistake.

Her hands shook when she pointed the gun at me and I immediately knew that she couldn’t do it; and that all of these were just bluffs. She snarled; “I hate you!”

“Well, I cannot say I love you too, so that’s pretty understandable.” I slurred, feeling my consciousness begin to wane.

I was hungry, weak, bleeding and there were tons of toxins flowing through my bloodstream so it was normal for me to feel this way.

However, just as I was about to close my eyes and let the darkness creeping in to finally take me, I suddenly heard a shout from outside.

“LEILANI!” The voice was loud. It was familiar!

It was Zevran.

My heart leapt in my chest and in that moment, I saw realization dawn on Keisha. A flicker of something like fear crossed her face before it was slowly replaced by a desperate determination.

Her hand holding the gun stopped shaking and she raised it, pointing it directly at my head just as Zevran barged into the room.

She growled; “Move, pretty man and I’ll pull the trigger. Also… just so you know, it contains silver bullets.”

At that moment, my eyes briefly met Zevran’s and I was stunned when I saw the fear in his eyes. The anger…

and then there was something else. Something that looked too much like desire tinged with panic.

I froze.

4/5

Healing Slowly But Surely By R.
