Joseph 162

162 She’s in danger.

Zevran.

I was in a meeting with the members of our board and my brothers concerning the shift of power when suddenly, I felt a sharp pain lance through the back of my left

knee.

I winced quietly, gritting my teeth; But when looked up and found my brothers also sporting uncomfortable expressions on their faces, I instinctively knew that this was not a coincidence.

The last time I felt something like this was when Kael was in an accident… well, scratch that, it also happened when Leilani was sick, and now, I couldn’t help but be afraid that she must be in some sort of situation.

Danger perhaps?

I looked up quickly, my heart racing as I turned to the girl speaking and said; “Please excuse me, I have an urgent call to make.”

And at my words, everyone on the table turned to look at me. However, while everyone else nodded, my brothers cocked their eyebrows at me. And I knew that they were just as restless as I was. Just as antsy…

Goddess, please protect Leilani… even from me.

‘Do you feel it too?’ Caelum’s voice suddenly seeped into my head and I frowned, nodding slightly at him before walking out of the room.

‘I do. What’s happening?’ Kael responded coldly, his voice hoarse and flat, sounding through the mindlink like dry ice on sandpaper.

‘I think it’s Leilani. I want to call Gavin to ask about her.’ I responded quickly, just as I slipped into my office and went to stand before the glass to ceiling window

overlooking the city.

My heart raced as I picked up the phone but just as my fingers hovered over Gavin’s number, Kael’s voice came again. He ordered

‘You should call Frostclaw. He’s been with her the entire time.’

And that… that made me still for a moment. It made me feel somewhat uncomfortable, nervous and irritated.

1/5

<

162 She’s in danger.

+57

-Because call me jealous, but it was one thing to know that she always spends a lot of time with Frostclaw and another to acknowledge that fact myself.

Hell, even the thought of her with him still makes me so jealous, and it was infuriating -to say the least- that now, we’d resigned to accepting his existence, especially since knowing that he was actively pursuing her.

I gritted my teeth in anger, and even though really didn’t want to call him, my worry for Leilani overrode my pride. I sighed. “Okay” And with that, I dialed Alpha Jarek’s

number instead.

He picked up on the first ring, his deep baritone seeping through the speaker as he drawled; “Hello?”

“Alpha Frostclaw, it is I, Alpha Zevran… one of the Stormborn brothers, and I am sorry if I am calling at an inappropriate time but—”

“Leilani isn’t here.” He cut in, his voice sharp and cold, almost rude.

I gulped down the biting words I was tempted to say to him. And Heavens… sweet heavens… the only reason I was letting him talk to me this way was because I was really, desperately worried about Leilani.

Nothing more.

Exhaling deeply and counting to five in my mind, I finally managed to answer coldly; “Oh, yes! She’s the reason I’m calling. But I do not wish to see her or talk to her…”

But as soon as those words slipped out of my mouth, I instantly regretted it and tried to rephrase; “Now wait, that didn’t come out the way I intended for it to. What I mean is that, we’re still mates and can still feel each other through the bond sometimes.”

“And?” Jarek snapped, his voice dripping with disdain.

Goodness, I wanted to punch his face. I wanted to smack his head into the closest wall.

*Deep breaths, deep breaths*

“…And I was in a meeting earlier when I felt her fear and pain. I think she’s in danger and you’re the closest person to her that I know of… and that’s why I called you.”

At my words, Jarek made a startled sound.

When he spoke again, he sounded… different A bit warmer. He asked; “Are you sure?”

“I am extremely sure.” I answered quickly, “I had to slip out of my meeting to make this

12:55

2/5

J

162 She’s in danger.

call. So please reach out to her and let me know how she’s doing when you do.” I said and with that, I quickly hung up before I would say something else that I wasn’t supposed to.

My hands now had gone clammy, and even though I no longer felt that rush of panic and pain like I did moments ago, a strange sensation still coursed through my spine, sending goosebumps spreading along the back of my neck.

I stood there for a moment, puffing out air through my mouth, but just when I decided to slip back into the meeting room, my phone began to ring and I froze when I saw that it was Alpha Frostclaw calling.

Is she back?

Has he found her?

I picked up the phone so quickly one would think I was in a: ‘watch me grab it, competition and rushed out; “Alpha Frostclaw.”

“I don’t think she’s fine.” His voice came next without a preamble.

He sounded… confused. Desperate. Scared. My heart began to race. “I just realized that she left her phone with me and I’ve been trying to reach out to her security guard, but it’s been impossible.”

“Isn’t she still at the hospital?” I couldn’t help but ask as I felt my throat go dry, and Hell, my panic tripled when he whispered;

“No. Her discharge papers were signed today. I even dropped her off at home earlier before returning to work… and now, she isn’t even picking her house phone. Her security isn’t responding. I don’t know what’s happening.”

That was the last thing I heard. I couldn’t even bring myself to respond as I let the phone clatter to the floor.

In one last desperate attempt to inform my brothers of what was happening, I mindlinked them to tell them what Jarek had just told me; And with that, I rushed into the closest elevator, immediately forgetting all about the meeting.

I drove like a mad man to her house, actively bypassing every traffic rule possible. My limbs shook when I stepped out of my car; And goddess, I knew that I shouldn’t be here. I knew that she would hate to see me, that coming here meant disobeying the

restraining order that she had filed against my brothers and I.

But I didn’t have any choice.

3/5

<

162 She’s in danger.

“You don’t have to do too much. You can simply leave as soon as you find out that she’s safe.” My wolf advised, and with that thought, I began to march over to her front

door.

However, I had just taken a few steps forward when I noticed a body laying behind her parked car. A startled cry left my lips and I rushed over, freezing when I saw that it was a strange looking young man.

“Hey, wake up!” I yelled at the boy but he wouldn’t move. By the gods, his breathing was shallow too.

I vaguely remembered Frostclaw talking about ‘a certain security’, and fearing that this might be him, I let go and ran towards the front door.

It was locked.

Goddess, it was locked.

My heart began to beat so fast, I feared it would jump out of my skin. My body shook so much, gosh… What the fuck is this?

I felt the corners of my eyes sting and I knew then and there that I was about to cry. A whole Alpha like me was about to cry? For Lellani?

Yes, for Leilani!

I was that worried about her.

1

-And it wasn’t until then… until I had pounded on her door for several minutes nonstop… that I caught a whiff of something weird in the air.

I crouched slowly to the threshold of her door where the scent was the strongest: it was her smell alright, but with a tinge of something. Something that smelled like… tranquilizers and… and silver.

My heart shattered at the thought and throwing my head back, I let out a loud cry before frantically running back to my car.

Leilani was in danger.

And there was only one person I suspected to be behind this: Chalice.

“Leilani is missing!” I informed my brothers through our mindlink, “…and please, one of you should call 911.
