\n\u201cIf this evidence is genuine,\u201d the Great Elder said, his voice calm but heavy, \u201ctomorrow\u2019s trial may change the pack\u2019s course.\u201d
\nHe took the crystal from my hands. Only then did I notice how badly they were shaking.
\n\u201cI must warn you,\u201d he continued. \u201cOnce the Elder Council convenes, there is no withdrawal. Whatever follows, you will face it alone.\u201d
\nHe studied me for a long moment. \u201cAre you prepared for that?\u201d
\n\u201cYes,\u201d I answered without hesitation. \u201cI am.\u201d
\nWhen I left the council hall, night had already fallen. The pack territory lay quiet beneath the dark sky, only a few lights glowing in the distance. I didn\u2019t stop to look back.
\nI returned home and packed a small bag-only what I could carry. I knew I couldn\u2019t stay.
\nMy plan was to leave the territory and stay in the nearby human city until the trial. But when I reached the bank, something felt off.
\nThe clerk avoided my eyes.
\n\u201cLuna,\u201d he said carefully, \u201cthe Alpha ordered all accounts under your authority frozen last night.\u201d
\n\u201cAll of them?\u201d I asked.
\nHe nodded. \u201cHe said it was to protect the pack. To prevent\u2026 impulsive decisions.\u201d
\nSo Kael had moved faster than I expected.
\nAs Luna, I should have had access to half the pack\u2019s resources. Instead, I stood there unable to afford even a single night\u2019s stay.
\nFor years, I had let Kael handle everything. I kept almost nothing for myself. I thought that was trust. I thought that was partnership.
\nI borrowed money from a friend and checked into a small hotel on the edge of the city.
\nThat night, I opened my phone.
\nThe recording of our argument from the festival was everywhere-cut, edited, framed to make me look unhinged.
\nBy morning, I was the villain.
\nThe mind-link buzzed nonstop. Accusations. Insults. Threats.
\n\u201cThe Alpha was only caring for his sister\u2019s pup.\u201d
\n\u201cShe\u2019s obviously cheating.\u201d
\nEven the hotel staff recognized me. No one said anything, but their looks were enough.
\nI turned off my phone and activated the crystal.
\nPain struck instantly-sharp and sudden, forcing the breath from my lungs.
\nThe images began.
\nEvery night, after I fell asleep, Kael left our room.
\nThe crystal showed him in the nursery, holding the pup with a gentleness I had never known. His movements were careful, practiced. Once, he leaned down and pressed a kiss to Serena\u2019s forehead, his hand resting at her shoulder.
\nI watched without making a sound.
\nAfter our bond was formed, Kael had been clear-he didn\u2019t want children. There would be no heirs. No discussions.
\nWhen I became pregnant by accident, I begged him to let me keep the pup.
\nHe didn\u2019t argue.
\nHe injected me himself.
\nAfter that, he barely touched me.
\nNow I watched him return to the nursery night after night, caring for another she-wolf\u2019s child as if it were his own.
\nBy morning, my assistant contacted me. Council mElaras were questioning my judgment. Allies were wavering.
\nI returned to the pack.
\nKael and Serena were already waiting.
\n\u201cElara,\u201d Kael said as soon as he saw me. \u201cEveryone\u2019s watching. Don\u2019t make this worse.\u201d
\n\u201cThere\u2019s nothing to discuss,\u201d I replied, walking past him.
\nHe stepped into my path. \u201cThe pup is innocent. How can you be like this?\u201d
\nMurmurs rippled through the hall.
\nSerena approached, holding the child. Her eyes were red, her voice trembling. \u201cSister, I never meant to hurt you. If I hadn\u2019t come here, none of this would\u2019ve happened.\u201d
\nShe stumbled.
\nKael caught her instantly.
\nThe mind-link erupted.
\n\u201cShe scared Serena.\u201d
\n\u201cSuch a cruel Luna.\u201d
\n\u201cEnough,\u201d I said.
\nSerena looked up at me, tears streaking her face. \u201cI\u2019m sorry. Please don\u2019t be angry.\u201d
\nKael turned on me. \u201cDo you hear yourself? She\u2019s apologizing.\u201d
\n\u201cElara,\u201d he said, his voice hard, \u201cwhat happened to you?\u201d
\nI opened my mouth to speak.
\nBefore I could say a word, Kael stepped in front of Serena, his voice carrying through the hall.
\n\u201cYou\u2019ve crossed a line,\u201d he said. \u201cHow can you be so cruel to someone who\u2019s done nothing but apologize?\u201d
\n\u201cSerena has shown nothing but humility,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd you won\u2019t even grant her basic decency. Your jealousy has consumed you.\u201d
\nThe words died in my throat.
\nAnd for the first time, I understood-I wasn\u2019t meant to speak at all.
\nI kept my face steady, even as something inside me began to fracture.
\nAfter a long silence, I spoke only once. \u201cThen I\u2019ll see you at the Elder Council.\u201d<\/p>\n
