\nThe color drained from Kael\u2019s face until he looked almost bloodless. He stumbled back a few steps, as if the ground beneath him had suddenly given way.
\n\u201cNo\u2026 that\u2019s not possible.\u201d His head shook again and again. \u201cHow could what we have just disappear?\u201d
\nHis voice quavered, caught somewhere between disbelief and panic.
\nHis emotions shifted seamlessly. One moment shattered, the next desperate. He lunged forward and wrapped his arms around me from behind, gripping me as though force alone could keep me from leaving.
\n\u201cDon\u2019t go, Elara,\u201d he said hoarsely. \u201cYou can\u2019t leave me like this. I swear I\u2019ll make it right. I\u2019ll be twice the mate you deserve.\u201d
\nHis words tumbled out in a rush. \u201cJust give me one more chance. I swear to the Moon Goddess-I\u2019ll be a good mate again. Please\u2026 I\u2019m begging you. Don\u2019t abandon me.\u201d
\nBefore I could respond, Kael\u2019s Beta hurried forward and planted himself squarely between me and the exit.
\n\u201cLuna, the Alpha has sacrificed everything for you,\u201d he said sharply. \u201cYou have no right to hurt him like this. You should be apologizing.\u201d
\nHis voice carried easily through the hall. \u201cHe\u2019s stood beside you for years. How can you be so heartless? Have you forgotten what you shared during those full-moon nights?\u201d
\n\u201cYou spent ten years building a sacred bond. Are you really willing to throw it all away?\u201d
\nHe sneered. \u201cAnd don\u2019t tell me you\u2019re willing to abandon the future Alpha heir growing inside you. Would you really let him grow up without a father?\u201d
\nThe hall went silent. Every eye turned toward me, heavy and expectant. The air felt thick, pressing in on my chest.
\nMy mother gasped, clutching at her chest as she swayed. \u201cElara\u2026 you\u2019re pregnant? And you still want to dissolve the bond?\u201d
\nMy father\u2019s voice thundered across the room. \u201cMadness! Complete madness! You would let the future Alpha heir lose his father?\u201d
\n\u201cThis is an insult to the Moon Goddess herself,\u201d he roared. \u201cA betrayal of our pack\u2019s bloodline!\u201d
\nThe accusations came fast, piling on top of one another.
\n\u201cShe\u2019s lost her mind.\u201d
\n\u201cShe doesn\u2019t even care about her own child.\u201d
\n\u201cShe\u2019s so jealous of her adopted sister that she\u2019s destroying her own family.\u201d
\n\u201cThe pregnancy has clearly made her unstable.\u201d
\nWith every word, something inside me hardened. I wrenched myself free from the hands gripping me, my wolf snarling low in my chest.
\n\u201cI will raise my pup on my own,\u201d I said. \u201cThis bond ends.\u201d
\nMy mother stared at me, trembling. \u201cYou\u2019ve dreamed of bearing the Alpha\u2019s heir your entire life. Now that the Moon Goddess has finally blessed you, why are you doing this?\u201d
\nOnce, I had wanted that future too. For ten years, I had prayed beneath the full moon, again and again, begging the Moon Goddess to grant me a child with Kael. Every hope had ended in disappointment.
\nA soft movement drew my attention. Serena stepped forward, cradling her pup in her arms.
\nThe moment he saw her, everything else ceased to exist. He moved to her instantly, reaching for the pup. The sharp edges of his Alpha presence melted away, replaced by a gentleness I had never once received.
\nHe looked at that child as though it were his own blood.
\nI remembered the pup I had once carried. If he had lived, he would have been old enough by now to run at his father\u2019s side.
\nInstead, he was gone. Lost without explanation. And when I had searched for answers, Kael had told me to move on-to focus on my duties-as if my grief were an inconvenience.
\nSerena\u2019s voice broke through my thoughts, soft and careful. \u201cLuna, I heard everything. I never realized the Alpha helping me would upset you so deeply.\u201d
\nShe lowered her head. \u201cSister, I never meant to come between you and Kael. Our parents taught us to care for one another.\u201d
\n\u201cI\u2019ll leave the pack today,\u201d she said quietly. \u201cI\u2019ll take my child and go. I won\u2019t interfere with your bond again.\u201d
\nKael\u2019s expression darkened. He turned to her at once.
\n\u201cThis is your home,\u201d he said firmly. \u201cNo one has the right to drive you or your child away.\u201d
\nThen he faced me, his eyes cold with accusation. \u201cElara, don\u2019t take your anger out on an Omega. You\u2019re still recovering from your injuries-don\u2019t let your wolf lose control again.\u201d
\n\u201cHow can you treat your own sister like this, after everything our parents have done for you both?\u201d
\nOnce again, the blame landed squarely on me.
\nMy father seized my arm, his wolf eyes flashing. \u201cYou will obey an Elder\u2019s command. How dare you mistreat Serena?\u201d
\n\u201cShe has always been the better daughter,\u201d he snarled. \u201cAnd you-nothing but disgrace.\u201d
\n\u201cIf you still insist on breaking the bond now that there\u2019s a child involved, don\u2019t blame me for exiling you from the pack.\u201d
\nI took a slow breath, looking around at the faces I had once called family.
\nMy eyes burned, but I refused to cry.
\n\u201cThis time,\u201d I said quietly, \u201cI choose myself.\u201d
\n\u201cThreats won\u2019t change anything.\u201d
\n\u201cThe bond is over.\u201d
\nI turned and walked away.
\nKael\u2019s roar followed me down the hall. \u201cYou\u2019ll regret this, Elara!\u201d
\n\u201cDon\u2019t expect to take anything that belongs to this pack. Prepare yourself to live as a lone wolf.\u201d
\n\u201cAnd don\u2019t blame me when I destroy whatever warmth is left between us.\u201d
\nI didn\u2019t look back.
\nI went straight to the Elder Council chamber and placed the dissolution papers on the Great Elder\u2019s desk.
\n\u201cI request an emergency council meeting,\u201d I said steadily. \u201cTo dissolve my mate bond with the Alpha.\u201d
\nThe Great Elder skimmed the document, his expression grave. \u201cLuna, are you certain? This will affect the entire pack.\u201d
\nI reached into my bag and took out a faintly glowing crystal.
