She forced down her anger and found a waiter to help.

In the car, she glanced at Caleb. He slept soundly in the back seat. She drove straight to a nearby five-star hotel.

:

At noon the next day, Caleb woke with a splitting headache. As he reached to rub his temple, he felt an arm thrown across his chest.

“Bruce, get up,” he began irritably.

He turned his head and stopped cold when he saw who lay beside him. It was Penelope. Both of them were nearly unclothed.

Penelope’s eyes brimmed with emotion. “Cal…”

Caleb shoved her away, tumbled from the bed, grabbed his shirt and trousers, and dressed in a fury.

“How did you end up sleeping here?!” he demanded.

Penelope nearly fell to the floor, her hair and clothes in disarray. “I went to the bar to pick you up because you were coming home, but you vomited halfway, so I booked the nearest hotel.”

Caleb’s temple throbbed. “You went to pick me up? Who told you to go get me?”

Penelope, on the verge of tears, forced out a half-truth. “A friend saw you at the bar and said you were drunk. She feared you might be in danger and asked me to come check on you.

Caleb sneered, “Then explain this. You were worried I’d be in danger, yet you crawled into my bed?”

“No,” Penelope said, humiliated. “You mistook me for Sydney last night.’

She had planned that line from the start. It seemed the most plausible.

Caleb’s vein pulsed at his temple. He asked evenly, “So I slept with you?”

Penelope lowered her head. “Yes.”

“Fine.” Caleb ground his teeth, buckled his belt, and spoke without mercy. “Then make sure you take the pill. If you get pregnant, I won’t acknowledge the child.”

His words hit her like lightning. She had not expected him to wreck her plan so bluntly. She clung to his arm and sobbed. “Even if I get pregnant, it’ll only be yours. Why won’t you claim it?”

Caleb laughed coldly. “Do you not know how dirty you

are?”

If she became pregnant, no one would know the father’s identity. Probably not even she would.

Being called “dirty” in that context cut deep.

Penelope broke down. “How am I dirty? All these years, I-”

1/2

“Enough with the sanctimony,” Caleb interrupted as he fastened his watch. “Fold away whatever petty schemes you are nursing. If you dare pin some bastard kid on me, I will not hesitate to accompany you to get it aborted.”

He watched her reel, then leaned over and patted her pale face with a faint, cold smile. “And even if it were mine, I would not accept it. If you give birth to it in secret, I could still strangle it.”

With that, Caleb left.

Penelope reached for him, but he pulled away without mercy. She collapsed to the floor with a thud.

The hotel door slammed.

Penelope shuddered. ‘What can I do? The child in my womb…’

Her original plan had been to engineer this scene so the baby would naturally join the Hamptons and restore her leverage. She had never imagined Caleb would destroy that plan with a few words. One hand slid to cover her belly.

Penelope had no choice. She would find a way to get it aborted.
