\u201cJudy, Nan!\u201d<\/p>\n
I heard a familiar voice saying from across the student lounge and when I looked, my eyes grew wide.<\/p>\n
\u201cHoly shit, she\u2019s actually here,\u201d Nan breathed, her eyes fixed on Sammy who was walking towards us with a bright smile on her lips.<\/p>\n
\u201cSammy?\u201d I asked once she finally approached.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s so good to see you both,\u201d Sammy said, sitting in the seat across from me. \u201cI Hope I\u2019m not interrupting.\u201dnoveldrama<\/p>\n
\u201cNot at all,\u201d I told her. \u201cWe are just surprised to see you are all. I didn\u2019t think you\u2019d actually be here.\u201d<\/p>\n
She nodded.<\/p>\n
\u201cI needed to get away from my pack and my boyfriend. Gavin was kind enough to set me up here. I\u2019m really excited to start this semester with you guys.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen do you graduate?\u201d Nan asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cTwo more years,\u201d Sammy explained.<\/p>\n
\u201cToo bad we didn\u2019t know you soon,\u201d Nan said with a small frown. \u201cWe are graduating this year.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s huge,\u201d Sammy said with a bright smile. \u201cLet me guess, you\u2019re in the Gamma Force major?\u201d She asked me.<\/p>\n
I nodded.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat gave that away?\u201d I chuckled.<\/p>\n
She laughed too and then turned to Nan.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat about you? You don\u2019t strike me as a gamma,\u201d she said pointedly.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m a chef,\u201d Nan said, nibbling her lower lip. \u201cAt least aspiring to be.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNan is a great cook,\u201d I said, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and pulling her closer to me. \u201cShe\u2019s in the culinary program and on her way to graduating top of her class. Don\u2019t let her sell you short.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sammy smiled thoughtfully at that.<\/p>\n
I noticed more eyes wandering in our direction and I tried my best to ignore them. Sammy on the other hand was glancing around with a frown before leaning into the table to speak to us.<\/p>\n
\u201cEveryone is staring at you,\u201d she whispered. \u201cIs it like this all the time?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOnly recently,\u201d Nan told her, just as quietly. \u201cSince she won the Gamma competition, it\u2019s all anyone can talk about.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s still all over the news,\u201d Sammy agreed. \u201cSo, I don\u2019t blame them for talking. Not often a woman takes home the title and becomes a part of the Elite. It\u2019s a rarity and you happened to be that rarity.\u201d<\/p>\n
I felt my cheeks getting warmer by the second and I nibbled on my lower lip.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat am I supposed to do? I can\u2019t have them staring at me all the time. Will it<\/p>\n
ever wear off?\u201d I asked, staring between the two of them.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sure it will,\u201d Nan said gently. \u201cTry not to worry about it too much.\u201d<\/p>\n
I nodded and took a deep breath.<\/p>\n
For the rest of the day, I tried to keep my head as low as I could. I could still feel eyes on me and hear the whispers that went on around me, but I tried my best to ignore them. By the time classes concluded for the evening, I was utterly exhausted. I thought about calling Gavin and telling him that I didn\u2019t want to tutor Matt today, but I thought against it. I didn\u2019t want to do that to Matt; he was expecting me around now anyway and Beta Taylor was probably already waiting for me to take me to Gavin\u2019s Villa.<\/p>\n
Before I left my final class of the day, my professor stopped me.<\/p>\n
\u201cJudy, can I speak with you for a moment?\u201d She said, a small smile playing on her lips.<\/p>\n
\u201cIs everything okay, Professor Rivers?\u201d I asked when I reached her desk.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes; firstly, I wanted to congratulate you for winning the competition. That was a huge accomplishment,\u201d she said thoughtfully.<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you,\u201d I said, feeling a bit awkward.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd secondly, we are going to be getting a new student at some point this week He\u2019s in your major and he\u2019s going to need to be caught up. I was hoping you\u2019d be able to tutor him and help him out a bit. You\u2019d get paid of course,\u201d she told me.<\/p>\n
I nodded without hesitation; I could use the money, and I enjoyed tutoring.<\/p>\n
\u201cSure, I would love to. When does he arrive?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cTomorrow,\u201d she replied. \u201cHe\u2019s transferring from a different school.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOkay,\u201d I told her. \u201cI\u2019d be happy to help.\u201d<\/p>\n
She smiled.<\/p>\n
\u201cThanks, Judy, I knew I could count on you.\u201d<\/p>\n
With that being said, I left and went straight toward the front of the campus. Taylor\u2019s car was already<\/p>\n
parked out front when I arrived.<\/p>\n
opened the back door and paused when I saw Sammy seated in the car with her bag pressed against her chest.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d I asked getting into the car.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlpha Gavin said I can stay in the mansion with you,\u201d she told me, raising her brows. \u201cif that\u2019s okay. I don\u2019t really have another place lined up right now and he figured that\u2019d be the easiest solution.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s completely fine,\u201d I told her. \u201cI\u2019m happy to have you.\u201d<\/p>\n
She beamed at me my words.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlso, he got me a job,\u201d she told me. \u201cSo, I can earn my keep in his pack while I\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cA job?\u201d I asked, confused. \u201cWhat type of job?\u201d<\/p>\n
She broke out into a wide grin.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou are looking at your new handmaiden.<\/p>\n
