But Ronan\u2019s brute strength allowed him to twist free, retaliating with a vicious swipe that tore through Lucien\u2019s side.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I gasped, watching blood stain Lucien\u2019s obsidian fur.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No more.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lucien was fighting for me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And 1-1 was just watching.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Frozen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Like I had been in that cell. Not him. Not the only one who ever looked at me and saw more than damage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A heat surged through me so suddenly I could barely gap. It spread like fire through my limbs, my chest, my skull. I dropped to my knees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nyra controls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t breathe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The world exploded in light.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Paws.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I looked down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>White.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And I was angry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ronan didn\u2019t even see me coming.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I launched from behind, my jaws unhinging with a sound that didn\u2019t belong in this world. I sank my fangs into the thick muscle of his throat, right where wolf met man. His blood gushed hot against my tongue, but I didn\u2019t let go.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He roared-more from shock than pain-and I bit down arden\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then I threw him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know where the strength came from. All I knew as I needed him away from Lucien, Away from me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 412\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>+5 Pear\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ronan\u2019s body sailed through the air like a broken doll and crashed headfirst into a jagged stone. The impact echoed like thunder. His body twitched\u2026 then went still\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His wolf form shimmered, collapsed in on itself, and left behind his human body-naked, bruised,\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>unconscious.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unmoving.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I shifted back.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The transformation left me breathless. I collapsed to the pavement, gasping, shaking, my skin still tingling from the white wolf\u2019s rage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Ronan\u2019s body. At the blood pooling beneath his head. At his too-still chest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo\u2026\u201d My voice came out broken. \u201cNo, no, no-what have I done?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I pulled my knees to my chest, curling into myself. \u201cI didn\u2019t mean to- I didn\u2019t want-\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re going to send me back.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That was my first thought. My only thought.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Back to the prison. Back to the chains. Back to being nothing but a file and a cage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I was shaking so badly I didn\u2019t even feel Lucien until his coat was around my shoulders and his arms were around me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t mean to,\u201d I whispered again, because maybe if I said it enough, the moon would hear me. Maybe the gods would believe me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRiley,\u201d Lucien said, his voice low, firm, like a hand on my spine. \u201cBreathe.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I killed him,\u201d I choked. \u201cLucien, I killed someone-he\u2019s going to die because of me-\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, he\u2019s not.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His hand cradled the back of my head, tucking me into his chest. He smelled like blood and ash and the forest in autumn. He felt like safety.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did what you had to do. He came for you. And you stopped him.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I wasn\u2019t supposed to fight like that-I wasn\u2019t supposed to be like that. I-what if they see me as a threat?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What if-\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll protect you,\u201d he interrupted, without hesitation. \u201cAlways.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t want to believe him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But I did.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Because he had never once broken a promise to me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>2\/4\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>3\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 412\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His voice deepened in that strange, silent way I was still getting used to. A mind-link.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuke. Now. Bring a medic. Quietly.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I heard the answer ripple back in his mind, clear and obedient.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lucien stayed with me. Didn\u2019t move. Didn\u2019t flinch. Just eld me as if I wasn\u2019t a killer. As if I was still someone worth saving.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A few minutes later, Duke arrived with a healer. I didn\u2019t look up-I didn\u2019t want to see anyone\u2019s judgment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the healer kuelt beside Ronan and checked his pulse\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s alive,\u201d she said. \u201cBarely, But he is.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I exhaled so sharply I almost passed out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She touched his neck, frowning. \u201cHis wolf isn\u2019t healing the wound. The bite\u2019s too deep. He\u2019s been marked by a White Wolf. That kind of wound\u2026 his body won\u2019t regenerate on its own.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d I asked, my voice so small.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She glanced up at Lucien. \u201cIt means he\u2019ll live. But not without help. We\u2019ll need to get him to Mooncrest\u2019s primary pack hospital. Now.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Duke nodded and called in the transport.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They loaded Ronan up and drove him away, unconscious and bleeding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still alive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I was still staring at the space where his body had been when Lucien crouched beside me again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did well,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I blinked at him. \u201cWhat?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou fought back. And you won.\u201d His hand found mine, rm and warm. \u201cYou\u2019re strong, Riley. Stronger than any of them thought. Stronger than they wanted you to be.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I hurt him.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was going to hurt you. Again. Don\u2019t you see?\u201d He leaned closer, his forehead brushing mine. \u201cAnyone who tries to harm you is my enemy. And now, yours too\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed the lump in my throat. \u201cThey\u2019ll hate me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen let them hate you from under your feet,\u201d he growled softly. \u201cBecause you are a white wolf, Riley. You are rare. You are powerful.
