One or two stepped forward-until Kael turned and said coolly, \u201cShe\u2019s my sister. She ran away from home. It\u2019s a family matter.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And just like that, the spell was broken.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They backed off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not his sister!\u201d I screamed. Tears blurred my vision. \u201cI\u2019m not!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But no one came.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Desperation clawed at me. I scanned the crowd until my gaze locked with a middle-aged woman\u2019s. She looked uncertain but not hostile.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom!\u201d I sobbed. \u201cMom, help me!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed instantly. I don\u2019t care if you\u2019re her blood-she doesn\u2019t want to go with you.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He tried to grab me again, but a small army of women closed in. One called him a monster. Another kicked him in the shin. They formed a shield around me, protective and furious.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t hold back the sobs anymore.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The woman who\u2019d stood up for me gently wrapped an arm around my shoulders. \u201cDon\u2019t cry, sweet girl. If you don\u2019t want to go, then you don\u2019t have to.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew he wasn\u2019t a trafficker?\u201d I asked, stunned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course. That suit alone costs more than my car. But sweetheart, it doesn\u2019t matter. Even if he\u2019s your brother-if he\u2019s hurting you, he has no right to take you. I didn\u2019t look back.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I saw the station exit ahead and pushed myself harder.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Almost there. Don\u2019t bother.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I faced him again. \u201cYou think this makes you powerful? Dragging me back like a prize?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t answer. He didn\u2019t need to. His expression said it all.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That he\u2019d won.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That he always would.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I clenched my fists. \u201cYou can keep me in chains if you want.
