Empty bottles were already piled up in front of him, and he was still chugging more alcohol like his life depended on it.

“Zachary, stop drinking.” She grabbed the bottle out of his hand. “Autumn’s with another guy now and she doesn’t want you anymore, so what’s the point of drinking yourself to death? She’s not even going to look your way.”

At the mention of Autumn’s name, the drunk Zachary finally said something. “Autumn…”

Kristen sat down next to Zachary and took his hand in hers. “Zachary, look at me. I’m the one who truly loves you. I was wrong to leave you before. I messed up. Tyler’s out of the picture now, and so is Autumn. It’s just the two of us. Let’s get back together. The alcohol burned going down, but at least it dulled the pain in his chest.

Ever since they got back from Southcrest, Elowen had given him an ultimatum. Stop bothering Autumn or she’d cut him off completely.

Her words had been brutal but impossible to argue with. “Zachary, Autumn stood by you when you had nothing, and you threw it away. Now she’s finally smart enough to leave, and suddenly you’re full of regrets? Don’t you see how pathetic that is? If you have any decency left, you’ll leave her alone and let her move on.”

Kristen watched Zachary looking completely dead inside, and anger flared through her.

What the hell did that bitch Autumn have that she didn’t?

But she forced herself to calm down and think. Once the door closed, the woman’s hands immediately went to his shirt buttons.

Her cagerness should have tipped Zachary off that something was different, but he was too far gone to care. He was even more desperate than she was, terrified this was just another dream. He pulled her onto the bed and collapsed on top of her.

When he’d completely exhausted himself, he fell asleep with her in his arms.

Kristen traced her fingers across Zachary’s face as he murmured Autumn’s name in his sleep.
