The person who caught Sienna’s eye was the woman with short hair sitting in the middle.

She wore a well-tailored, light gray suit and a simple white shirt underneath. The woman was twirling a pen with her fingers. Her gaze seemed intense yet a little laid-back at the same time.

Sienna hadn’t expected to meet Neriah Sanderson during the first round of interviews. She had once read an interview with Neriah in a magazine.

Neriah was 30 this year. She had traveled to Inora for her studies and now moved back to her home country. Neriah was a famous interior designer well known for her unique designs.

Sienna calmed herself down. She handed over her resume and portfolio to the three interviewers. Then, she sat on a chair and waited for them to ask her questions.

Neriah was the company’s creative director. She scanned the papers fairly quickly. Then, she slowly looked through the

portfolio.

The man and woman beside Neriah were from the HR department.

The woman holding the resume asked, “It’s been a year since you’ve graduated. Why are you only looking for a job now?”

Sienna calmly told them the excuse she had come up with. “I felt rather anxious and restless back when I had just graduated. I decided to slow down a little and study more. I had planned on undertaking postgraduate studies initially, but I didn’t manage to pass the entrance exam.”

The man and woman from the HR department took turns to ask her questions. The questions were centered around her personal information and the expectations she had regarding her job position.

Sienna did not lose her composure like she did last time. Her answers were proper and natural.

Suddenly, the man asked, “You got married at such a young age. How are you going to balance between your work and family? Our employees have to work overtime or go on business trips sometimes.”

“Work will come first, naturally.” Sienna beamed. “My husband is very supportive of me pursuing my career. He’s an ordinary office worker. There are days when I don’t even see him. So, my family won’t cause any hindrance to my work.”

“Do you and your husband have any plans of getting a baby soon?” The man asked.

Just as Sienna was about to answer that, Neriah interrupted the conversation. Her words were harsh and direct.

“Mr. Zielke, how many times do I have to remind you about it? That’s not one of the criteria we look at when we’re hiring. What our company values the most is a designer’s talent.

“Are we going to eliminate and miss out on a candidate just because they have plans to have a baby in the future? Don’t forget that some of our company’s female designers are also married and have kids.”

The man’s face grew ashen. He tried to reason with Neriah. “If she gets pregnant right after she joins the company, she’ll be granted maternity leave and receive various help and resources.

“Her being away on maternity leave might also cause delays for our company’s projects. I’m saying all this for our company’s sake.”

Neriah cast the man a sidelong glance and said in a clear voice, “Even if that happens, what matters is she’s useful to us. Besides, she can’t possibly be planning to get pregnant and give birth to babies like a nonstop cycle. Someone like that won’t

X CLOSE

Chapter 30

be able to work here for long or climb up the ranks in our company anyway.

2/2

“I don’t think those who have been chosen to work for Jierre Studios are after such measly, short-term benefits. Moreover, all three of us would have to reflect on ourselves if we did allow someone like that to work for the company.”

After a short pause, she added, “Also, it was pointless for you to ask her this question. Are you going to blindly trust what she said just because she told you that she had no plans to have a baby?”

The man was rendered speechless. It was finally Neriah’s turn to ask questions relating to the design profession.

She happened to flip to the page showing Sienna’s work, “Children’s Library”, that the latter had submitted for a competition during college.

“Why did you design for the slope of this curved bookshelf to be 35 degrees instead of the usual 45 degrees?”

“With the slope being at 35 degrees, it’ll be easier for children below four feet tall to take the books from the shelf. It can also prevent the books from slipping off the shelf.

“I finalized on how much the angle should be after doing some observations at a kindergarten,” Sienna replied unhurriedly.

Neriah nodded. She flipped to the last page of the portfolio, where there was “The Quiet Cottage”. It was a lovely, quaint cottage drawn in clean, fine lines. Yet, there was a loveliness about this cottage.

“This is an interesting piece.” Neriah lightly tapped her pen on the piece of paper. “You designed a rotating screen partition in this open space. Share with us about your thoughts.”

Sienna’s gaze fell on the work she had once poured her heart into creating. She curled her fingers subconsciously. Her voice was so steady that it sounded like she was telling someone else’s story.

“The screen features a rotating design to create variations of light and shadow according to the time of the day. In the morning, the sunlight falling over the screen would cast shadows on the floor. In the evening, changing the screen’s angle would help protect the house owner’s privacy.”

Neriah asked Sienna a few more questions which the latter had answered correctly. She even referenced the visual deception technique that Neriah had mentioned in her magazine interview last year.

Finally, Neriah asked her the most crucial and important question. “Tell us your understanding of Jierre Studios’ humanistic design philosophy.”

Sienna responded calmly. “Let the space tell the story. As you said, a good design is not about showing off your skills in the details. Instead, people will notice that there’s a valid reason in every detail of the house.”

There was a hint of approval in Neriah’s eyes. She used her pen to mark something on the score sheet.

Sienna felt quite confident about her performance throughout the interview.

The woman from the HR department informed Sienna to keep a look out for the announcement regarding the second round of interview. Sienna smiled and nodded.

When she came out of the conference room, Sienna spotted out of the corners of her eyes a person who seemed rather familiar standing at the end of the corridor.

That person wore a dark green suit. He walked off in big strides and moved out of sight very quickly.

X CLOSE

She got the divorce and bolted 30 Chapter 30 1/2 Chapter 30 Around ten minutes later, a staff member called […]

[27

post-20104","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-she-got-the-divorce-and-bolted-novel
["GET
