After dumping Natalie out of the car, Jeffrey had undoubtedly taken Abigail back to Foster Garden. If not for Felix\u2019s phone call, the two of them would probably have been curled up in each other\u2019s arms, fast asleep.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Natalie suddenly sneezed. When she rubbed her nose and looked up, Jeffrey was watching her with an unreadable expression. And then Natalie saw it-on his neck was an unmistakable hickey. It was a reddish purple mark, irregular in shape, stamped just above his shirt\u2019s collar.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Her heart jerked painfully for a split second. It was an unprovoked ache. She didn\u2019t even know why it hurt.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Since she decided to divorce him, she\u2019d told herself the same thing countless times\u2014she needed to turn around, not look back, and not love him anymore.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Jeffrey\u2019s repeated acts of harm and indifference had only strengthened that resolve. She would never return to him.\u00a0<\/p>\n
So, Natalie had to ask herself why it still hurt.\u00a0<\/p>\n
She turned her head and looked out the window, noting how dark it was outside. People were more fragile at night, especially after dealing with this kind of mess.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd his sister was even worse. She came in without the slightest intention of resolving things properly. Does she think the Bennett family stands above us?\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAb, I might be the one who got beaten, but there\u2019s no way they didn\u2019t think of you. What they\u2019re really doing is provoking and challenging you. If I back down tonight, the Bennett family will walk all over the Wright family from now on.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Felix fanned the flames, exaggerating every detail.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Stephen couldn\u2019t stand listening to it and tried to argue, but Natalie pressed him back into his seat.\u00a0<\/p>\n
She shook her head. \u201cSteph, I\u2019m begging you. Leave this to me. Don\u2019t let it blow up any further.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

When I was overseas all those years, he\u2019d send me things, check up on me, and keep my parents company. To me, he\u2019s like a real brother.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cNow, he\u2019s suffered such a huge injustice, and the other party is\u2026\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
She didn\u2019t finish the sentence, but everyone present understood her perfectly.\u00a0<\/p>\n
