Nor did she want to rely on this seemingly omnipotent man every time she ran into

trouble.

She pressed her lips together, deep in thought, and after a pause said quietly over the phone, Thank you. I understand.”

As the self–appointed chief wingman, Oscar sensed something off in her response, though he couldn’t quite explain why.

Unable to sort things out on her own, Bethany pulled over and called her best friend.

At the same time, Holly had been about to call her.

“Beth, are you alright? I went travelling a few days ago and didn’t pay attention to what was happening back home,” Holly said anxiously.

She continued, “I’ve only just landed today and realized that something so serious had

happened.

“It was Ella again, huh? What was she even trying to do? Was Uncle Noah helping her bully you again?”

Bethany chuckled softly. “It’s fine, Holly. Don’t get so worked up. The situation was complicated, but it was ultimately resolved.”

“It’s been resolved?” Holly had even been prepared to return home and ask her grandfather for help.

Noah might be formidable, but no matter how powerful he was, he still couldn’t overrule her grandfather.

“Yes, it has,” Bethany replied calmly. “It was probably Silas who helped me.”

Thinking of the woman who had appeared out of nowhere and the unusually swift police investigation, she suspected it was all connected to him.

She simply hadn’t expected Oscar to be the one to tell her.

That night, the name Silas had called out was likely Oscar’s.

“Holly, let me ask you something,” Bethany said hesitantly. “If two gay men clearly like each other, why wouldn’t they be together?”

11

Chapter 103

2/3

The question caught Holly off guard.

After a moment’s thought, she answered cautiously, “Maybe… they’re incompatible? You mean your husband and the person he likes aren’t compatible?”

“Incompatible?” Bethany didn’t quite grasp it.

“Oh, Beth, I mean hypothetically,” Holly explained. “Say your husband prefers to be dominant, but the person he likes does too. Wouldn’t they be at odds with one another? In that case, it probably isn’t love. If it were, one of them would be willing to make the sacrifice.”

Bethany fell silent. She suddenly seemed to understand why Silas and Oscar could never be together.

But then, why had Oscar told her about it? In a way, weren’t they rivals?

Unable to make sense of their relationship, Bethany decided to drop the issue. “Hols, Silas helped me a lot this time. What do you think I should give him in return?”

She had already given him ties and cruise tickets.

A watch, however, was far beyond her means. One of Silas‘ watches alone was worth two apartments in the city center.

“He doesn’t lack money,” Holly said thoughtfully. “No matter how expensive the gift, he might not even care. Why not give him something he genuinely likes? Do you know what he likes?”

Bethany paused. “I don’t…”

Silas was difficult to read. He seemed carefree yet impenetrable. It felt as though no one could truly reach his heart. Perhaps it was simply because he was guarded around her.

In the end, she said, “Alright. I get it. I’ll look into his interests.”

“Oh, right!” Holly suddenly exclaimed. “I remember he went to the same high school as Noah. They were both on the school basketball team–and they even played a match later. Silas won! I don’t know if he still plays, but haven’t you heard? Some NBA stars are coming for an exhibition game. Why not get him tickets?”

Bethany lit up. “That’s perfect!”

She would give him two tickets again.

Worried that it might be awkward for Silas to invite Oscar himself, she decided to give each of

them a ticket instead.

Y CLOSE

Chapter 103

“Thanks, Holly.
