She was as thin as a sheet of paper, and her lips were almost translucent white.

Just moments ago, he had carried Bethany into the car and had Davin open the door for them.

Davin had been so shocked by Silas‘ terrifying expression that he forgot to ask how he managed to get inside.

On Silas‘ ring finger, a silver ring faintly glowed.

He had found Bethany’s bag outside the attic. Her phone was dead, drained from all his calls. He had no idea how long she had been trapped–or who was behind it.

Could it be Gary? Or perhaps it was Diana, whose cruelty was more like that of a stepmother.

Jeremy had just woken up when Silas called him. “What’s wrong? Why are you calling so early?”

“Dad, I wanted to let you know that I’m about to call Diana and give her a piece of my mind.”

Jeremy was confused. “Silas, are you out of your mind? Why would you do that? Did she do something to you?”

Silas chuckled mockingly. “Not me. It’s Bethany. Gary’s people locked her in a tiny attic for an entire night. Can’t I be mad about that?”

Jeremy was stunned for a moment. “I–Isn’t Diana Bethany’s mother?”

Silas scoffed. “When a parent marries the wrong person after a divorce, they stop being your parent. They automatically fall into that same stepparent role. Anyway, I’m just giving you a heads–up. That’s all. I’m hanging up now.”

Jeremy stared at his phone after the call was disconnected, quietly lost in thought.

Then it hit him. Silas was making such a fuss for his newlywed wife, so maybe he did care about her.

He told the butler, “If the Reid family calls later, don’t answer.”

Whether or not they would answer their calls in the future would depend on Silas.

Gary and Diana were eating in the dining room. Leo and Ella, who were known for sleeping in, hadn’t gotten up yet. Just then, Gary’s phone rang. He saw an unfamiliar number and hesitated for two seconds before picking up. “Hello?”

“This is Silas.” Silas got straight to the point, which stunned Gary.

“Oh, Silas. I thought it was a stranger calling. Why are you calling so early?”

Gary exchanged a worried glance with Diana. After all, they had been plotting to get Bethany’s Brennan Group shares.

Had she complained to Silas?

Silas‘ stance was crucial.

Gary steadied himself and tested the waters. “Did Bethany tell you something?”

“Oh? What would she tell me?” Silas drawled, answering the question with another.

Gary’s breath caught for a second. “Well, it’s nothing, really. Last night she came for dinner, her mom said a few things, and maybe she got upset. It was just small stuff, Silas. Don’t mind it.”

“Don’t mind it?” Silas snorted. His tone dripped with sarcasm as he continued, “My wife was locked in your attic for a whole

Y CLOSE

Chapter 45

night, and you tell me not to mind it? Since when am I that tolerant?”

“Locked in the attic?” Gary was shocked. “Silas, is this some kind of misunderstanding?”

2/2

Diana frowned and gestured to Gary to hand her the phone. “Hello, Silas. I heard from Gary about the attic thing. Beth went home right after dinner last night. How could we have locked her in an attic?”

Silas sneered. “If she wasn’t locked up, then who did I carry out this morning? A ghost?

“Diana, I have a question for you. Which orphanage did you adopt Bethany from? Maybe I should help her find her biological parents, so she won’t mistake her stepmom for her real mom and end up heartbroken.”

“Silas, I…” Diana was at a loss for words.

Claim Bonus For Free Every Day>>

A Mix-up Made Me His Enemy’s Woman 45 Chapter 45 Silas stared at the woman sleeping on the hospital bed.
