He instructed,” Change the ticket. I’ll take that 11:30 pm flight.”

Ralph responded quickly, “Yes, Mr. Brennan.”

Silas put on his coat, grabbed his phone, and headed to the parking lot. He wondered if Bethany could sleep soundly at home

without him.

At the thought, the corner of his lips curved up ever so slightly.

But when he returned home at 3:30 am, the empty rooms made him frown.

Bethany’s door was open, but there was no sign that she had come back to sleep.

Silas stared at his phone screen. The message he sent her was at 9:30 pm. He wondered about her whereabouts.

Since it was too late, he didn’t wake Jane.

When Jane got up and opened the door to start breakfast, she found Silas on the couch.

“Mr. Brennan, aren’t you on a business trip?”

Silas‘ voice was hoarse as he asked, “Where’s Bethany? Didn’t she come home for dinner last night?”

Jane froze for a moment. “Yesterday afternoon, she told me not to prepare her dinner, saying she wouldn’t be coming home to eat. Isn’t she here? She didn’t come back all night?”

Seeing Silas‘ increasingly dark expression, Jane stopped talking.

Silas immediately grabbed his car keys and drove to Bethany’s apartment. He thought that she might have returned to her place since he was away.

But no matter how many times he called Bethany or rang the doorbell, no one answered.

Silas rushed to the security office to check the surveillance footage and found that Bethany never returned yesterday.

He began to grow increasingly panicked.

The phone that was reachable moments ago was now off.

Silas immediately called Oscar, who was still groggy from sleep.

He said, “Silas, it’s 7:00 am. Why are you calling me now?”

Silas went straight to the point. “Where’s your cousin? Give me his number. I need help.”

Oscar’s cousin, Callan Osborn, was the youngest chief of police. Oscar immediately realized the seriousness of the situation.

He said, “Okay. I’ll send it right away.”

15 minutes later, Silas tracked down the last location of Bethany’s car–the Reid residence.

Knowing Bethany, Silas was sure that she wouldn’t stay overnight at Gary’s house.

Bethany didn’t know how long she had been unconscious. She felt her throat being squeezed tight by invisible hands, unable to make a sound.

Faint light filtered through the gaps in the attic’s wooden walls. She guessed that it was already morning.

X CLOSE

2/2

She shifted over to the door and weakly knocked on it. She didn’t have much strength, but she couldn’t just sit and wait for death.

Perhaps one of the Reid family’s maids would hear her and open the door.

Bethany lost count of how many times she knocked. Her whole body grew limp.

Just then, a familiar, deep male voice came from outside. “Bethany, Beth, are you in there?”

Bethany fluttered her heavy eyelids and kicked the door with her foot in response.

“Beth, is that you? Knock twice if you’re there!”

She did so weakly.

The man said again, “Okay, step back a little. I’m kicking the door open. Watch out, okay? I don’t want to hurt you.”

Bethany backed away cautiously, then rasped, “I’m ready.”

With a loud bang, the old wooden door was kicked open, and the dim room finally filled with light.

Silas gazed at the woman on the floor, her lips drained of color. He immediately stepped forward and pulled her into his arms. “You’re okay now.
