I watched Madeline break in front of me. I had to carry her back to the cabin after she passed out. She had cried so much in those few minutes that I could still hear her cries in my head.

When I arrived back, I saw my children hiding behind the big couch, hugging each other. As soon as I placed Madeline on the couch, the kids jumped up to check on their mother.

“Daddy, where is Gina?” Bodhi asked me, his with tears as he held my hand and looked up at me.

yes!

It was as if he was waiting for an answer from a man he believed would protect them. At that moment, I had no answer for them.

I gently patted his cheek and stepped over to close the cabin door. Now the home felt like a curse.

I rushed toward my parents‘ bedroom door and started knocking on it forcefully. Before she could say anything else, I punched the doorframe, and everyone’s attention snapped back to me.

“Have you lost your mind?” my father yelled.

“Did you not hear what I said?” I shouted back. “That monster came, and it took her.”

I was about to explain again when my eyes landed on Elara and Bodhi. The monster does not come inside the house,” I told her.

I said the truth instantly to comfort her, even though her words stayed in my mind. She was not wrong.

I had been right there. If I had my alpha strength, I would have tackled it, at least long enough for my wife and child to get inside the cabin.
