She stood up, placed the insulated lunch box back on the bedside counter, and then helped Duncan sit up. Though Duncan was tall and burly, he had lost a significant amount of weight and was still quite heavy. He intentionally refrained from using his own strength, leaving the task entirely to Liberty.

The last time Liberty was injured, her recovery took several months. During that time, she avoided heavy work, and her strength had not fully returned. It required considerable effort for her to assist Duncan in sitting up, which made him uncomfortable. Liberty didn’t have enough strength, and Duncan struggled to help due to his leg pain.

Initially, Duncan didn’t exert himself on purpose, but as he wanted to sit up quickly, he began to cooperate more with Liberty, who was finding it difficult to assist him. Ultimately, Duncan couldn’t stand her closeness; she was his favorite woman.

“Mr. Lewis, does your leg hurt this much?” Liberty asked.

Duncan grimaced, replying, “Why wouldn’t it hurt? It hurts even to move.”

“I’m sorry; I don’t have enough strength to lift you all at once,” Liberty apologized.

Taking a few breaths, she raised the bedside barrier at the end of the bed, propped up the small table for Duncan to eat from, and placed the insulated lunch box on it.

“Mr. Lewis, try this soup and see if it suits you,” she suggested.

Duncan replied flatly, “I have a spoon; help me find it.”

Liberty acknowledged him with an “Oh.” Earlier, while searching for a bowl, she had seen a spoon. After locating and cleaning it, she handed it to him.

After all the effort, Duncan felt hungry, but he maintained a cold demeanor. “I’m done with the soup; you can go now.”

“Go away.”

Liberty replied, “I’ll step outside. You should drink the soup quickly while it’s hot; it won’t taste good once it cools down, and you might end up with diarrhea.” She encouraged him to finish the soup promptly.

As Duncan began to sip the soup, Liberty gently said, “Mr. Lewis, we’re all worried about you. We don’t want to see you in pain. The doctor said your injury will heal, so please don’t give up on yourself.”

Duncan looked up at her and coldly responded, “If you say another word, I won’t drink the soup.”

“Alright, I won’t say anything. Just take your time drinking,” Liberty said.

Duncan lowered his head and resumed drinking the soup. Liberty couldn’t tell if his hunger drove him or if the soup she prepared was just that good. After a few sips, Duncan couldn’t stop and ended up finishing the entire lunch box of bone soup, even the remnants.

“How was it? Did you like it?” Liberty asked warmly.

But Duncan replied, “You can leave now.”

Liberty smiled, picked up the insulated lunch box, stood up, and said, “Mr. Lewis, look at me. I’m leaving now.” After saying this, she took the lunch box and exited the ward.

Once outside, she went to the pantry to fetch some boiling water before returning to clean the lunch box in the bathroom. After washing it, she re-entered the ward.

Setting the insulated lunch box down, she said, “Mr. Lewis, I’m back.”

Duncan merely stared at her, thinking, This woman! She’s taking advantage of the fact that I can’t walk and there’s nothing I can do about it!

“Okay!” Liberty readily agreed.
