Why are you making this difficult?” she asked gently.

Duncan remained silent, keeping his eyes shut.

Treating Liberty this way saddened him more than anyone could understand; it felt as if someone had plunged a knife into his heart.

But in his current state, he didn’t want Liberty to see him.

Back when he was healthy, Liberty hadn’t loved him.

Now that he had lost the use of his legs, she wouldn’t love him either; she would only feel pity.

Noticing her son’s reluctance to speak, Mrs. Lewis fell silent and refrained from further conversation.

After a brief moment of quiet, she stood up and walked out.

Gently opening the door to the ward, she found Liberty waiting outside.

“Mrs. Lewis, is Mr. Lewis okay?” Liberty inquired, having heard the commotion inside.

Mrs. Lewis closed the door to the ward again, leading Liberty to a chair before sitting down herself. With a sigh, she said, “Liberty, please don’t argue with him. He’s… well, we just had to lift him back into bed after he fell.”

Alas!

Duncan’s legs were severely injured; if he had fallen, it would only exacerbate his pain.

The thought of that scene caused Liberty’s heart to ache.

“Mrs. Lewis, I’d like to go in and check on him,” Liberty said.

Mrs. Lewis pulled Liberty back gently. “He doesn’t—”

“I want to see you. Liberty picked up the insulated lunch box and walked toward the ward door, but two bodyguards immediately blocked her path. Please turn back.”

“Step aside, both of you,” Mrs. Lewis commanded as she approached and pushed against the bodyguards. He had lost a considerable amount of weight, his beard was unkempt, and his face was covered in stubble.

Liberty approached quietly, placing the insulated lunch box on the bedside table. She sat at the edge of the bed and pulled out a tissue to wipe the sweat from Duncan’s forehead.

Suddenly, Duncan opened his eyes, sensing a different presence.

When he saw Liberty sitting beside him with a tissue in hand, ready to wipe his forehead, her movements froze as their eyes met.

“Duncan,” Mrs. Lewis called out.
