Why did you bring home supper? Are you upset with my cooking? Is that why you didn’t want me to make dinner for you?”

Zachary tended to be petty, often blowing small issues out of proportion, leading him to believe that Serenity disliked him.

“No way! Babe, your cooking is far better than mine. I just felt nostalgic when I passed by the night market and couldn’t resist picking up some of the snacks I used to enjoy,” she explained.

Zachary didn’t know how to prepare those local delicacies. He only ate what ordinary people had for breakfast while pretending to be poor. Back then, Serenity was unaware of this, so she always packed him a local breakfast, and he ate it to maintain his secret.

He still recalled the time Serenity made him a greasy bacon sandwich; he had only eaten the bread, leaving the bacon untouched.

“Do you want to share a meal?”

Serenity settled onto the sofa and placed the disposable containers on the coffee table.

Zachary noticed that the opened boxes contained spicy tacos, fried cheese curds, and two BBQ chicken wings.

He turned to grab some disposable gloves for her.

“If you’re in the mood for these, you could ask Sam. Our chef probably makes them better.”

“Sometimes I just crave takeout. I want a bacon and egg wrap for breakfast at Liberty’s diner tomorrow,” Serenity replied.

She appreciated simple, everyday food.

Zachary understood what she meant and fell silent.

He quietly observed

Serenity ate with great enthusiasm, as she had not been raised on such foods. She didn’t purchase much, so she managed to finish everything on her own. However, she still felt somewhat unsatisfied after her meal. “If I didn’t have a full schedule tomorrow, I would’ve bought two bottles of beer,” she mused.

Zachary, looking somewhat gloomy, responded, “You have a full schedule every day! Do you even remember my last name? How long has it been since you told me that you love me? How long has it been since you bought me flowers or new clothes?”

“I’ve been at work all day and came home feeling exhausted. I thought that seeing your smiling face and hearing your soft voice would make it all worthwhile, but you weren’t home when I got back!”

“Ms. Serenity Hunt, you are seriously neglecting your husband!” Zachary declared, protesting earnestly.

Serenity was left speechless as she regarded him. Zachary appeared upset, turning his face away and refusing to look at her.

“Babe…” Serenity quickly began to soothe her husband. This man had always been assertive, accustomed to being the center of attention, while Serenity was different. Though he seemed to have altered his demeanor, he hadn’t changed at all.

Reflecting on the situation, Serenity realized she had indeed been busy lately and had let him down a bit. She had come home later than he had on several occasions. Since Zachary was used to being the focus of attention, he grew frustrated and expressed his displeasure.

“How could I forget your last name?” Serenity asked. She moved closer, wrapped her arms around Zachary’s and softly said, “Your last name is York, and your first name is Zachary. I truly love your name, so I will never forget it for the rest of my life—unless I grow old and start to…”

“Alzheimer’s. If that happens, I might forget…” Zachary turned his face back to her and stared intently.
