She genuinely had no interest in him at all. This realization left him feeling defeated, but he quickly moved past it. Liberty had gone through a failed marriage and was currently being harassed by her ex-husband’s family. As a result, she felt repulsed by love and marriage.

Duncan understood that it would take a long time to win back Liberty’s heart and help her believe in love and marriage again. He was willing to invest several years in pursuing her and patiently awaiting her response. He wasn’t in a hurry; he was prepared to wait, unless she got married to someone else.

“Good morning, Liberty,” Duncan greeted her.

Zachary left with Serenity, cradling Sonny in his arms. As they walked, he complained to his wife, “Honey, I was drunk last night and woke up with a headache this morning. I think my headache got worse because I didn’t see you when I opened my eyes.”

Serenity linked her arm with his and replied softly, “I didn’t wake you because you were sleeping soundly. Does your head still hurt? You can continue resting after breakfast. It’s the holidays; you should take it easy.”

“Come and rest with me,” Zachary urged.

“Okay, I’ll be right there with you,” Serenity answered.

The unhappiness Zachary had felt from not seeing his wife upon waking quickly faded away. He was easily soothed.

Duncan turned to Liberty and asked with concern, “How are you feeling today, Liberty?”

“I’m doing well, thank you for your concern, Mr. Lewis,” Liberty responded formally.

After a brief silence, Duncan remarked, “Liberty, you’ve become much colder toward me.”

“That’s not true. I’ve always treated you this way, Mr. Lewis,” Liberty replied, gazing at him calmly. “You’ve helped me a lot, and I feel…”

grateful to you. Why would I be cold to you?” She appeared unchanged, yet she was different; she was now cold and distant towards him. “Liberty, I really like you,” Duncan confessed his feelings openly. Liberty remained calm, responding, “Thank you for your affection, Mr. Lewis. However, I’m not interested in relationships at the moment. Please stop thinking about me; it’s a waste of time. You and Ms. Harmon are well-suited for each other.”

“It’s true that Lily and I share similar social status and backgrounds. Our mothers are best friends, and my mom has been pushing for a relationship between us, but I’m simply not attracted to her,” Duncan said, looking at Liberty seriously. “Liberty, I’m no longer a young, impulsive boy. I’m thirty-six, and I know what I want and what I’m doing. Every word I say comes from my heart. I understand you’re not interested in relationships right now, and I can wait. I just hope you won’t be cold and distant with me.”

Liberty met his gaze and replied, “I’m not avoiding the issue, Mr. Lewis. I just don’t have feelings for you, and I don’t want to give you false hope or waste your time. Mr. Lewis, I’m a divorced woman. This doesn’t mean divorced women can’t pursue love again, but I no longer believe in it. I’m focused on running my breakfast diner and raising Sonny, and that is enough for me.

“I know you’re not being impulsive or trying to deceive me, but we truly are not a match. Please don’t waste your efforts on me any longer, Mr. Lewis. You’re a wonderful person, and if you shift your attention elsewhere, you’ll find someone better suited for you than I am.” Liberty had no doubt about Duncan’s feelings for her; however, she was not interested.

Liberty was a young girl who lacked experience in love and was not one to rush into a relationship. In addition to the differences between her and Duncan, Mrs. Lewis’s dislike for her further hindered her from developing any romantic feelings. Liberty had finally managed to distance herself from the conflicts she had endured with her in-laws; she had no desire to create more headaches or become angry over issues with them again. Why would she complicate her life once more? Furthermore, she genuinely had no feelings for Duncan and had never considered becoming a couple with him.

“If you’ll excuse me, Mr. Lewis,” Liberty said apologetically, “I’ll be heading into the house first.” With that, she walked past Duncan.

Chapter 1544 Duncan noticed the calmness in Liberty’s eyes.
