Coffee, however, was off the table..

William walked inside and took a look around the place. The unit was over two decades old with a classic design and decor.

After reclaiming it from Natalie, Scarlet had gone through the place from top to bottom. She had changed the locks.

The old furniture, most of which was left behind by her parents, had been used by Natalie’s family for almost 20 years. Scarlet was a bit of a clean freak, so she cleared it all out.

After emptying the place, she replaced everything she could, including the toilet and appliances. Then, she chose furniture that matched the old style as closely as possible. Lastly, she hung her parents‘ photo back on the wall.

William inquired, “You spent most of your savings on these, didn’t you?”

Scarlet had rarely spent her own money when she was with him the last few years. Everything she ate, wore, and used had been taken care of, and she had saved all her salary and bonuses.

However, a doctor’s salary wasn’t particularly high. This one round of purchases had consumed more than half of it.

“What does that have to do with you?” she questioned. “What do you actually want to talk about?”

“Weren’t you the one who said you wanted to talk to me yesterday?” he asked. “What was it you wanted to say then?”

“There’s nothing left between us to talk about.” Scarlet tightened her knit cardigan around herself. “I’m free the next few days. Pick a time. Let’s get our divorce finalized.”

William felt his breath hitch. Instinctively, he wanted to loosen his tie, only to realize there was nothing around his neck. It hit him that the suffocating feeling in his chest wasn’t caused by his tie.

“That can wait. I’ll have my lawyer draft the agreement first.”

“Is that really necessary?” Scarlet thought that would only complicate things. “We don’t have any children or shared assets. I don’t think we need an agreement at all.”

“How is it unnecessary?” William tilted his chin. “You have a villa at Wolke Bay, yet you chose to live in this rundown place. If word gets out, people will think I, William Cooper, am the kind of man who skimps on his own wife.”

“Correction. I’m going to be your ex–wife soon.” Scarlet frowned. “Also, how is this place rundown?”

“How is it not rundown? Any property that is over 20 years old counts. Plus, you’re afraid of the dark. Aren’t you worried that this old place is haunted?”

Ghosts weren’t scary because they might exist. They were scary because of what people imagined in the dark.

Scarlet hadn’t been afraid until now. At that moment, she could already picture her imagination running wild the moment the lights were off.

It hit her that there were no floor lights in the bedroom. That morning, the sky had already been bright when she went to sleep, and she’d been too exhausted to care. However, tonight….

“Shut up!” Scarlet was so angry that she wanted to punch him. “This is my parents‘ place!”

William gazed at her lazily. “That’s precisely who I’m talking about! They’ve been gone for almost two decades. That’s ancient by ghost standards.

“Who knows, they could be so happy you moved back that they bring some relatives and friends to visit you. Imagine, all of them standing around your bedside in the middle of the night, smiling while they watch you sleep.”

Scarlet missed her parents sorely, but the thought of waking up in the middle of the night and seeing them at her bedside

Earn $100 Free

X CLOSE

Chapter 68

202

still sent shivers down her spine. Frustrated, she lifted her foot and kicked William in the shin. “You’re so annoying!”

Scarlet hadn’t held back. William hissed, and weirdly enough, the suffocating feeling in his chest eased a little.

He shouldn’t have felt good about it. Yet, he did. Perhaps it was because she hadn’t thrown one of her little tantrums at him in a while.

Scarlet used to kick him whenever he annoyed her. She’d always been as stubborn as a mule, and he’d indulged her for it. When she was upset, she’d give him the cold shoulder and never give in. He was always the one who caved and went to make

peace.

Her slipper flew off her foot. Scarlet hurriedly planted her foot on the other shoe and reached for the table beside her to keep herself upright.

William bent down to pick up the slipper she had kicked away. Then, he dropped to one knee and lifted her calf, intending to help her put it on.

Scarlet pressed her lips together and drew her foot back. “I can do it.”

William seized her ankle and pulled her leg back. She resisted, and they went back and forth like that a few times.

He lazily lifted his gaze. “If you keep moving, you’ll flash me.”

Scarlet stiffened in a heartbeat. She hurriedly gathered her cardigan around herself, wrapping it firmly around her nightdress.

William helped her slip the slipper back on and let go of her foot. Scarlet immediately put her foot down and took a step back.

He rose to his feet and softened his tone slightly. “If you don’t want to live at Wolke Bay, I’ll transfer the villa in the northern suburbs to you.”

Scarlet glanced at him. Her reaction was much calmer than he’d expected. “That won’t be necessary. I don’t want it anymore.”

The villa no longer held any significance for her.

End of the Contract,Start of His Obsession

Chapter 68 In the end, out of courtesy, Scarlet invited William in.
